Food Service is very fast paced; you have to be self motivated and able to push through a lot of frustration. I work for Sysco and find the work very satisfying, but exhausting. Best lesson I was taught; learn you boxes.

Don’t get too excited on shuttle positions. They typically takes a very long time to get into especially if your in a union barn. If that’s the case, you may never see a shuttle gig open up. Obviously there are exceptions...

It’s a race on night shuttle ;). Although actually the slower you move and the more methodical you are the quicker you go! Haste makes waste!

Night shuttle usually is a seniority bid game. Every now and then they hire off the street for shuttle, but not to often, usually shuttle is for guys with seniority or higher ranking drivers who have done every job in the companies transportation division. It’s usually high rankers or guys who have been around the block.

Sysco will have new guys do transit stuff from time to time however that’s not the case at most places most places are like GFS and US foods where generally shuttle is done by senior guys or guys who have covered a lot of runs and routes throughout the system and have some experience under there belt. Because you need to know what your doing because it’s more then out and back depending on the length from the lot to the warehouse.

It’s usually out go to wearhouse go to somewhere else and then head back. Depends on the hall too.

The shuttle guys at my yard play a lot of hurry up and wait. It's hard to go quickly when you're sitting around waiting for the warehouse to finish loading your trailers.
I can't speak for all US Food warehouses but the shuttle drivers in my area are paid $2 less per hour than delivery drivers and they typically work less hours, so it's not as attractive to senior drivers. I've only seen open positions filled by injured delivery drivers and external hires.

Our guys play the hurry up and wait game too.

We have a lot of senior guys at GFS on shuttles although shuttle does pay a little bit less then delivery. Although you can make money, just depends how much hard work you want to do.
