Had anyone had success with dorm-sized (3.1 to 3.3 cubic feet) fridges (fridge/freezer combo) on 1200-watt inverters?

I'm concerned not so much about the wattages (from what I've seen, they pull no more than a couple hundred watts peak and settle down to 100 or less--correct me if I'm wrong), but more about being jostled around in the truck. I've always heard that normal fridges need to rest for a period after being moved and assumed that "moved" implied shaken going down the road. Then there's the consideration of the compressor and moving parts being shaken all the time.

Do they last a long time? Or is this a bad idea?

    Thanks!

I've had one.. I strapped it to my top bunk... I had it on a 2000 watt power inverter and it did fine... they dont last long though unless you mount them onto a bracket of some kind... the vibration of the truck will kill the compressor, itll rattle all the time...

That's what I was afraid of.

How long did yours typically last? And what bracket do you speak of?

Mine lasted about 6 months... then compressor went out... I'm talking about a bracket like angle iron from lowes... just rig up something to get it off the floor to keep it from rattling... you can buy the fridge that's made for your truck from the dealer and have them install it

Company truck and I suspect that they won't let me do that last part. That said, I'll ask.

    Thanks for the tips!

2 years mine so far. I removed the passenger seat and ratchet strapped it to the floor.
I have a 2,500 watt pure sine wave inverter.

My sugestion would be to buy a small fridge either from Wallmart or Home Depot / Lowes $50-$100. Then build a pallet width of top bunk. Staple fridge to pallet.
Beauty about Walmart is if you want you can buy extended waranty and if fridge breaks return for a new one.

The compressors of real fridges, not thermoelectric coolers, have oil to lubricate them. Jostling them isn't the problem, but laying them on their side is. If you lay them down on a side they need time for the oil to return to the normal location. Unless you drive for Swift or CR England your dorm fridge will likely always be right side up.

I've heard that some dorm fridges eventually fail due to vibration from potholes etc. If you want to be EXTRA careful you could cushion the fridge so it doesn't "feel" every bump on the road.

I had one that was 4.6 cubic ft. Bought from Walmart in my 780 Volvo. I took the doors off my bottom cabinet & it fit right in. Ran it off a 1500 watt inverter, it lasted the 2 years i had that truck, and another 5 years at the house in the garage as a beer fridge.
