That's good advice. I was pulling reefer for a small outfit, but once reefer got slow they asked me to switch to flatbed recently, since I had flatbed experience. While reefer is my preferred choice over all trailers, its painfully slow. It gets to a point where you have to make money instead of staying in your comfort zone. Since switching to flatbed, I haven't had to wait for a load or get impromptu days off. There's a lot more flatbed freight available than dry van or reefer freight, and by a long shot

    #### $4500 from Toronto to Winnipeg seems insane. I'm not very good with rates since I'm still a company driver, I'm gonna dig deeper and see what information I can poke out of the office dudes. Challenger runs alot of east coast which I'm sure doesn't interest many owner operators. I agree with the slim freight pickings, the load heading back was from South Dakota to Toronto. Deadhead from Winnipeg. Was actually very surprised.

I like the east coast. Good per mile rates, generally plenty of options, never far from home. I just don't care for nyc, or anything north of it. I like nj, pa, va, md.

@gokiddogo @Canadianhauler21 I wouldn't even waste your time, trying to understand mega carrier rates. I got a look at the Bison rate system a couple times, its literally quantum physics. They lose money in some areas, gain money in others, broker, ABL, Turnpike, mash it all together into the matrix and out comes a profit number. Like I mentioned before, Bison services some customers for FREE; simply to have that work/market share.

I was once told at Bison, that if they only make $1 dollar of profit on a load, after all expenses, but they pull 10 000 loads that week; that was acceptable to them. (Economies Of Scale)

This is also why, they are so obsessed with ABL (Asset Based Logistics) power only contractors now. Their trailer, their freight, someone else's trucks/fuel/insurance. They send these guys into no reload areas (IE Florida) and once that trailer is empty, start charging rental on it lol. So these poor ######## need to EAT IT HARD and chew quickly, cause the meter is running. (Find Reload, Get Reload Delivered, Return Trailer to Bison).

Their bread and butter, is always turnpikes, Walmart, Home Depot, Loblaws, McCain, Amlog etc etc. Corporate to Corporate sword fighting/space docking lol.

Well, they are correct about that. The money is in the trailers. Not owning the truck takes a lot of risk out of it. For breakdowns/emission issues then having to deal with an employee.
Just another way for suckers to lose money. No shortage of dummies.

    #### eh, kind of glad they will never be able to take over Ontario with the Indians slashing rates left and right LOL. It sucks how there's nothing any of us can do about it, the mega carriers are in politicians back pockets.

Is there anyone making money out west besides the mega carriers?

    Canucklehead and BigHossVolvo Thank this.
