how much space is needed between vehicles bumpers to avoid them hitting each other when driving? This is with using over the tire straps.

does the suspension have play forward and backwards that would cause them to hit at a certain point? Thanks

Enough to deliver it from point A to point B without damage
Some drive with 1" between , some wanna have 5" to avoid troubles , depending on driving habit and road you drive ...i once had my bar on the bottom rail driven for 20 miles

It better not, or that's one worn out front end. Up and down, but if the tires are strapped, it shouldn't go anywhere front to back.

You’ll be fine at three inches. For me Anything closer than that makes me nervous. There has been a few times that I’ve run it closer than that and it stressed me out worrying about it.

When you watch a vehicle bounce it's deceiving, the vehicle is only bouncing half the distance from it's static point.
They do seem to travel up more than down but that's a guess.
If you really want to find out exactly you could try what I've seen OEMs do and mount a play-do like substance at possible contact points.

One other note, even with over the tire straps, I run as close as a fingertip on some loads, (sometimes you just have too) BUT if you pay close attention to what holes you are using for your hooks "can" make a difference in movement, IOW if you dont want the car to move, make SURE that your hooks are as close as you can get to the edge of the tire, in an extreme situation, like I will be very close on the tilt lift deck, I will hook my straps first, THEN back the car slightly onto the hook so I can grab maybe another hole at the front edge of the tire, that car, even on a 35 degree angle, will not move, just my humble opinion.
