So I’m a first time owner operator ... I’m pulling a end dump and now im getting a new tractor I love the new w990 day cabs fully speced out but man after speaking with a guy at a western star dealer he has sold the #### out of me on this 4900xe .... with that being said I would like the knowledge and wisdom from a trucking vet .. do you prefer Detroit ( which is in westerns stars ) over Cummins or paccar which I could get in my w990... and what’s the heritage of a western star does it sit up there with kw and Peterbilt ???

    Thanks

I own a w900 and love it, can’t say anything about the w990. However I grew up in Maine when the logging industry was booming and western star trucks were the only trucks you saw. I drove two and really like them. Honestly though for me I’m a die hard Detroit fan. My w900 is a Detroit as well as my other truck. Cummins just keeps messing up and makes me think twice. Although I hear good things if you get the x15 performance series.

If it was my call, I would price up the KW with an x15 performance, and a western star and go with whatever has the specs for the price you want.

The 4900. They're actually bolted and screwed together.

Beware, the 4900 is a heavy truck though, so, keep that in mind especially considering you're pulling end dump.

The HVAC systems are antiquated, you either freeze or roast, and the side windows fog up constantly. (At least on the one I run anyway).

Overall, I love my 4900, i can promise I won't willingly give it up.

Just got a new Star to replace the 2013. I see the new one has different heater vents now with dedicated side window vents. And the heater control is electronic and no longer cable. They have made some upgrades, but you still can't fit a human hand in the door pockets! LOL.

You can kinda see the new side vents here. 084 (Large).jpg

Daycab dump truck. Can't remember what is on door. But it is 20,000 pound front, 20,000 steering lift and 46,000 rears.
It is SPIF schedule 23 here in Ontario meaning I can legal 9000 KG on front axle, 9000 on lift, and 18.000 on rears. 36,000 allowable gross.

I can look tomorrow when I go outside.

That's strange, we just took delivery of a new glider and everything with the HVAC controls and vents is the same at our 2013. Must be something with the way they're being ordered.
