I came close to buying one that exact same year with that exact same engine.

I don't like electronic engines, but I have to say that engine ran so nice and perfect and fired so evenly I really liked it.

And that era of the Mack Rd truck was really the best made. Very nice truck.

Looks too nice to be a farm truck.( no offense) I bet you could haul asphalt with this, and make the big bucks, AND, get laid off in the winter. Great truck.

That's what I'm going to do with it, haul rock, dirt, lime and getting in on a batch concrete job for the bypass and when it's time to plant and harvest it'll be parked and move grain from farm to farm when we need to. This is the oldest (and cheapest) piece of equipment on the farm. We aren't a big farm (1,275 acres) and our equipment is pushing $3 mil

Going to dredge up an old thread but lots of good info in here, looking to get into one as a side gig for my days off or mornings. I currently have a B CDL but have a manual trans restriction (my job paid for my license and in my dept we have Allison 3000s). Working on getting my endorsement on that, currently airbrakes and tanker qualified (I drive a Vactor in my line of work). Long Island seems to be over saturated with trucks and lots of it is union work, but my dad lives in Tampa and says business is booming, so I may pick up and relocate at some point.

I don't think that you could do that as a side gig with your own truck. There is a lot of expense.

Maybe someone from Florida will chime in, but I think Florida is a place where the rates are so low that it may not be worth it to start the truck. I don't think they could even begin to compare to what the rates are on Long Island.

Appreciate the feedback. I make a good six figures now but working with some union guys who are all about doing the least amount of work to scrape by and screwing management every chance they can gets me agitated as I like to go out and do my work at 100%.

I understand FL is a right to work state and I looked at CDL jobs, most pay barely above minimum wage, trucks are beat and overworked. Gas and insurance may be cheaper but not sure what fees and tags would be. Always an idea to go start my own Vactor business but they don't use them like how we do up here.

How is triaxle work if you're not part of the teamsters? It seems the unionized crews have all the contracts on lockdown...

VEry Very good. There is very large non union excavation companies up here winning all the turnpike and highway bids. Im signed on with one of these companies and work exclusively for them. This company im with, ill be busy till i retire. They pay 86 an hour plus hour travel time. State jobs like im on now for a while pay 95 bucks an hour up to 100 depending. Farthest i drive from home is like 20 miles and dump sites are close as well as quarries. I put like 180 miles a day on my truck. Work all the hours i want. Right now im doing 9 hour days and 6 days a week. Heck, you can pull a double if you want. No elogs in this line of work but i do want to get home to relax and be with the dogs. I would say pa, nj, delaware is where the big money is at. All non-union work

those are the best trucks ever made for dump truck work. They just dont break down at all. I had to have a 379 pete becuase i love 379's but they arent the best for taking abuse
