I'm looking to go out driving after putting 15 years in a UPS truck and I'm not really sure what kind of running I want to do. I have had some great input from this site already and have contacted a few companies. I was looking at the megas against the advice of some people (and I'm sure they are right) just to see what smoke they try to blow up your ###. Now we all know the rep Swift has but they have one thing that kind of caught my eye. They have dry, reefer, flatbed, express, intermodal, ocean container, etc. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them and if you would be able to bounce around divisions to learn different ends of the business and maybe find out what I like? That would be valuable to me because I honestly don't know enough to say "I wanna skateboard or I hate rail yards" don't know if this is a stupid question and I apologise if it is but I figured asking here would be a better shot of getting the truth (or if it's even a good idea) than calling a recruiter because I'm pretty sure they will tell me anything I want to hear.

@Lepton1 used to be a trainer (mentor I think they call it at swift). Hopefully he can help.

I have been at Swift for over 8 years. They have treated me well, perhaps because I have had good driver managers. Or, perhaps, because I have not been a pain in their backside too much.
All of it has been OTR dry van.

I do know you can move around and do different things, but I am not sure how often you can/should do it. You may need to stay in a division for a year or so before moving to another, just so they don't see you as somewhat sketchy. Moving to a different area can be akin to changing jobs, and no one wants to train you if they think you will only stick around for a couple months.

Also, being in Florida may limit some of your options.

@Moosetek13 thanks, I never looked at it like that but it makes 100% sense. Asking to move around constantly requires training and could make me look like a flake. I was just thinking it could be an opportunity to experience different sides of the industry.

they aren't too far from me and I have heard good things. I gotta get my foot in the door and get some experience first tho. @Chinatown told me to look at the bulk/juice/fruit haulers around here too but it looks like most want you to pick up some experience first and I completely understand why. Thanks for the suggestion.

Working for ups i’m going to imagine you have your hazmat, look for an environmental/industrial waste hauler near you. Ie: Clean Harbors, Hazmat Inc, etc. they would be the same, may run roll off today, vac tank tomorrow, flat bed the next day, and so on. I know at SJ Transportation when i worked there we had flats, steps, tanks, end dumps, roll offs, vans & reefers. You never knew what trailer tomorrow would bring. It was great experience & pretty good pay to boot.

. I was in package at ups so no CDL as of right now (looking at schools) and no ups driver (can't say about ups freight because that's a completely different company) has to have a hazmat because they will break down hazmat loads between trucks to keep it under weight. I used to have to go in after the trailer that picked up at soda stream to pick up the remaining co2 canisters so he would stay under 1000lbs.
