    Hello all!

Thank you for taking the time to see my post.. I am not currently a Class 1 driver, but I work alongside a fleet of them and I am in training to become their Transportation Safety Officer in our Live Haul department.

We are looking into performing spot checks to ensure that our drivers are performing their trip inspections properly and thoroughly and were given a few ideas from other Carriers that I'd like to try. One of the spot checks the other Carrier was using was hiding flags and tags around trucks and trailer units in specific areas that are typically neglected to identify which drivers aren't up to snuff.

As experienced drivers who have performed countless trip inspections, where are some really good spots I can hide my flags and tags? I'm looking for some really tricky (yet obvious) spots where if I hide a tag it won't cause any damage or safety concerns if the driver misses it and drives with it still on the unit.

Do you have any thoughts? Or maybe do you have some other suggestions for ensuring drivers perform their trip inspections correctly?

    Thanks again for reading! :)

    SafetyOfficer-

No Matter what "ideas" are sent to you-No Matter how "delightful" or organized you and your fleet are,

Drivers just aren't going to spend all that much time looking at someone elses equipment and getting dirty doing it..

Unless your fleet is compensating drivers by the hour- Not Gonna happen-

Drivers (in general) Will walk around the truck daily (If your lucky) Make sure lights work,Tires are holding air- And thats it.

There not crawling underneath Looking at brake Shoes and drums-Measuring Stroke travel- Checking Wheel seals and hubs- Theyre not going to check Steering box freeplay-Pitman arm-drag links-tie rod ends etc......

Just the way it is- They'll walk around looking for obvious things the eye can see....

Sure,You'll get them to pass your test at your shop ...But out in the real world- Different story-

Engine oil dipstick. Bet nobody finds it since opening the hood is not part of Alberta's Class 1 road test lol.

    Hey stayinback

Thank you for your input, I am very aware that unless drivers are being compensated they won't perform these tasks willingly, and I can't blame them.

I am attempting to implement an incentive program with a cash bonus to help entice drivers to do more thorough trip inspections to cut down on our failed CVSA inspections.. in your opinion is this enough compensation for drivers or would it really need to be based on an hourly rate?

Lol seriously! That's a good idea, I wasn't aware that it wasn't a part of the road test, quite strange!

Maybe now since Humboldt but back in 2012 when I got my license we never crawled under the truck or opened the hood. Instructor and examiner cited liability reasons.

May Work- All depends on the individuals-
Ive been in this business 30 years- Drivers (Whom just want to be just that-A driver) Do not (in general)want to have anything to do with getting dirty-or inspecting equipment underside that'll take 20-30 minutes- Not gonna happen.

I worked for a vac truck outfit in northern Alberta. Even paid hourly we couldn't get guys to do pre/post trips.

That seems reasonable to me, stayinback. You've made some solid points and I really appreciate your insight and expertise on this! I'm hoping that we can come up with something that will be enough incentive and compensation for our drivers to improve their trip inspections.
