Performing Effective Trip Inspections

Hello all!

Thank you for taking the time to see my post.. I am not currently a Class 1 driver, but I work alongside a fleet of them and I am in training to become their Transportation Safety Officer in our Live Haul department.

We are looking into performing spot checks to ensure that our drivers are performing their trip inspections properly and thoroughly and were given a few ideas from other Carriers that I'd like to try. One of the spot checks the other Carrier was using was hiding flags and tags around trucks and trailer units in specific areas that are typically neglected to identify which drivers aren't up to snuff.

As experienced drivers who have performed countless trip inspections, where are some really good spots I can hide my flags and tags? I'm looking for some really tricky (yet obvious) spots where if I hide a tag it won't cause any damage or safety concerns if the driver misses it and drives with it still on the unit.

Do you have any thoughts? Or maybe do you have some other suggestions for ensuring drivers perform their trip inspections correctly?

Thank you for your input, I am very aware that unless drivers are being compensated they won't perform these tasks willingly, and I can't blame them.

I am attempting to implement an incentive program with a cash bonus to help entice drivers to do more thorough trip inspections to cut down on our failed CVSA inspections.. in your opinion is this enough compensation for drivers or would it really need to be based on an hourly rate?

 

Lol seriously! That's a good idea, I wasn't aware that it wasn't a part of the road test, quite strange!

 

That seems reasonable to me, stayinback. You've made some solid points and I really appreciate your insight and expertise on this! I'm hoping that we can come up with something that will be enough incentive and compensation for our drivers to improve their trip inspections.

 

####.. I'm glad we're not at that point. I just want better quality lol
