Driving safely around big rigs

Stay out of that right lane and you wont have the issues with merging traffic.
Lane restrictions be ######,if your holding up traffic in the center lane
I WILL pass you on the left.

your right alot of people will never know what it is like to opreate a vehicle that can way 80,000 pounds, and thats why we connot assume that they should know either that is the most dangerious thing that some drivers do is assume and before they know it they are on top of some compact car blaming the driver of the car when the truck driver could have avoided the accedent . let me turn you guys on to the smith system since it is a copy written deal ill give you guys the web address http://www.smith-system.com/ if you apply these five keys to your driving then you should be able to avoid emergency situations not only while driving your rig but also your personal vehicle I appoligize if im getting preachy about the whole safe driving subject but i just got threw a work shop on safe driving and have since applied it to my every day driving

 

I'm a firm believer in the SMITH system. I was taught it while in driver school. Even though I don't leave for Werner until September, I apply it everyday driving my pick-up. I think that the Smith system should be taught to all drivers, regardless of what type of license you have.

 

"Smith" system? We used to call that common sense. It's always been around, now someone put their name on it.

 

Common sense is good. So is courtesy. And sometimes I think knowledge of basic physics should be a requirement for getting a driver's license.

Many fail at the "KISS" system,guess "Smith" is still in beta ? (never heard such)

One of my instructor's from school has 4.5 million safe driving miles due to useing the SMITH system, another has 4 million safe miles also due to the SMITH system. A lot of companies that hire students look for that(SMITH system) because of insurance. Don't knock it. It's a good thing to know.

Aim high in steering.
Get the big picture.
Keep your eyes moving.
Leave yourself an out.
Make sure they see you.


Most of that does boil down to as y'all put it "common sense". It's not that "new". It's not kid's stuff. There's a reason for new driver's being taught this. And apparently, for some, it works. Don't scoff at a company or it's driver's for being taught and/or using the Smith system.

 

Do you get a sticker to put in your window ?

 

I got 1.5 million in 10 years and never heard of it. I think that the 5 points are quite short of reality. There is a plethora of other things to keep in mind when driving a truck than just those 5.
I want a BIG window sticker.
