Unless they set him beside a gear shift.

At this point unless he gets another CDL permit without the restriction I don’t even think it’d be an option for the company to try.

Simple. Instead of the driver adapting to the job and attempting to get better at it, we have to dumb the job down so the lowest common denominator won’t feel bad about themselves.

These used to be the holy grail of trucking jobs. Everyone was just putting time in to get hired by these LTL companies. Now it seems as if they are competing for the same pool of drivers as the mega OTR carriers.

ABF's pay was cut back in 2013. They are no longer quite competitive where pay is concerned. Great benefits and a pension, though. And you may not be making much per mile, but they will work you literally to death. Until you're slumped over the steering wheel.

Well, this job is work. It’s not as much work as food service, but it’s more work than staring through the windshield for 11 hours straight as one of the OTR drones that works for the likes of C.R. England.

Problem is, nobody wants to work anymore, so in order to the terminals adequately staffed, we’re faced with the aforementioned dilemma, and very few former OTR guys can cut it doing this once they realize what it entails.

It’s not just ABF though. 20 plus years ago I was working in the shop at SEFL, if you were a new hire you started as a p&d driver until line haul became available to you. Then you were on the wildcat board until you had enough time in to bid on runs. Now it seems as if these companies are hiring line haul right off the street. Full disclosure I do not or have not ever drove for an LTL company. Just ones observation from the outside looking in.

I ran local for about a year and a half. You may be home everyday, but just long enough to do the three S’s

And that’s the other side of the double edged sword that OTR drivers usually aren’t aware of when they decide to jump ship.

I went to linehaul as soon as I hired on here, since at that time all the new guys did. The city guys tend to make more, especially if they have a more distant route like I have now.
