Be wary of any place that takes credit/debit cards. Some fall prey to skimmers on the terminals, others just have poor security. I worked at a large retailer for 7 years before getting a CDL. I was shocked and appalled at how lackluster their security was toward their customers. On multiple occasions, I sat in my manager’s office either eating my dinner, talking on the phone, etc while working evenings and right there out in the open were boxes with credit card account information. Everything you need to steal someone’s account number and even worse, their identity. I cancelled my cc account with them soon afterward and just said to hell with the employee discount. Got tired of people hounding me to use it anyway.

It is true that anyone is open to being hacked in today's world. Cash is always the best way to avoid any hacking. You can also just go inside a station and purchase any amount without using the pumps. Also look on any pump for the security tape that is placed across the screen showing your purchase. If it looks torn or tampered DO NOT USE!

I would recommend a fuel card I've never had any fraud with mine

I may have jumped the gun a bit.
I do realize that this could happen anywhere.

I don't believe that it is a good idea to carry large amounts of cash on me, considering that I am out for weeks at a time,
but I do need to look into a way to pay for goods and services
that isn't tied directly to my bank account.

Don’t forget don’t let them hold on to the card plus your ID

I have two accounts set up. I transfer over the amount I need to use on the card and that’s it. Might be helpful to you.

I'm thinking about getting one of those Green Dot or similar prepaid cards and just transfer a weeks budget to that as needed.

Might have to stash some jacksons in the truck somewhere.
When it's 90+ outside and a couple of guys want to tarp my load for me, it's totally worth it.

It has been a few years since I steadily run the lower 48, but I kept a wad of cash with me for any emergencies. I had enough fuel stops around the country that I could write checks at to not need to use a card, much at all. When I did it was usually a fuel card or just get a comcheck.
