How much would it take.

    It sounds like he is running 1000 , 1500 a day, a far cry from 2400 a week.
    It has been years ago, seems like, but I used to get 10 bucks a ton hauling peanuts out of the field, I had 3 live bottoms so they could load while I was gone. I might have run just a tad overweight, but could get 30 tons on and generally got 3 loads a day. It was only about a 60 mile haul at best, but waiting in line at the mill killed you.

    1500 per day per truck for 6 days a week... That's 9k a week before expenses... Figure what 20% for expenses, and 25% for driver??? That still leaves over 4500 to the truck for 1 weeks work.

    Last time I saw him he was bringing me fertilizer... IIRC he was hauling 37 ton with traditional A-train and 50 ton with double lead.

    lol, it would be nice to get by with 20% for expenses. I do not know a whole lot of rich truck drivers and I can easily gross better than that 9 grand a week, much of the time, if I want to. We must be busy. I told them I would go out tomorrow night, they called a few minutes ago and wanted me to go out tonight, I turned it down, so now I leave in the morning,which is fine, but their freight never leaves in the mornings, they are just sticking tonights load in my bin and I can go when I show up. lol

    Quarry stone for rich people. Nothing to do with gravel. I did 2 trips out and back this week. Maybe 1100 miles. Freight wise right around $2400. But bringing back like $7-8k in checks for material delivered. X4 trucks right now, 5 or 6 in spring.

    Its great for him. Shades of gray for me.

    Oh, and theres dozens of quarries and more dozens of drivers in this area all on the same gig.

    Gotcha, I have hauled some of that fancy quarry rock a few times. A lot out of the Texas hill country and some out of Montana.
    I used to haul boulders out of New Mexico to the phoenix area and denver area too and sell them, that was not a bad gig, as I got the boulders free, just had to furnish a loader to load them.

    I guess they used to farm around the boulders. These days a poor man hires a backhoe to get the boulders out of his field. A rich man hires a truck and a hoe to get them into his. What remains unchanged throughout the ages, is that a fool and his money are soon parted.

    Agreed. Or the owner is fudging what the "linehaul" really is.

    I had a local gig for a few months getting 25%...something was always fishy about it because on "good" weeks, I took home less than 1000. No insurance coming out either. I got 2 checks for over 1000 the whole time. I got out of there as soon as I had something else lined up.

    What is considered good money to one, may not be good money to the next. A person that makes 800 bucks a week with no large bills, no dependents, etc, they are doing well in theory. If your in my shoes, with a wife, kids, and child support for kids outside of my home family, then 1200 bucks per week still comes out to around 800 or so take home after child support, taxes and such. I think people get too hung up on finding an exact number for pay. I also think people get too hung up on cpm. At the end of the day, the take home for the majority of truck drivers hovers in the same tax bracket

    The more trucks you have, the lower the maintenance costs are as well...just something to factor in when looking at the maintenance for one truck, compared to nine.
