Hey all just looking for advise. Recently bought a 1986 KW K100E Cabover aerodyne with a 3406C catapillar and a 15 speed overdrive. The engine doesn't have jakes on it. I've been trying to get them put in but every time I order parts cat calls and says I need more. It's basically come down to I have to drive this truck due to other truck needing work. I run Kansas city to Portland and back every week pulling a 53 reefer. Looking for advise on the mountains with no jakes. I'm 28 years old but have been driving since I could reach the pedals. But I've never had a truck with no jakes. I've got a n14 currently and with jakes I still have to run down cabbage and others in low side 5th gear since none of the n14s I've had seem to have had strong jakes. I'm assuming the cat will be similar but have heard so many different stories on how to do this. My father has been doing this 40 years and said to just take it low gear and slow with light steady pressure on brakes letting the motor/Trans and brakes work together. He's made a couple rounds in the truck before me doing this and everything seems to have gone fine. Just curious on other experienced drivers in this area of driving. I like to research the crap out of everything before trying it myself. Sorry for the long post and thank you for any advise on this it's greatly appreciated.

You've answered your own question. If your Dad did a couple of trips and everything went well, just listen to his advice and do it the way he did.
Is it better to have jakes? Of course it is. Safer, too. But just take your time, use a little common sense, and you'll be alright.

Thats a scary thought. Id be tempted to mount a water tank and windshield washer pumps to spray the drums!

You're in luck. We still have a couple of brake water tanks and some plumbing in our scrap pile. We'll let 'em go real cheap.
We might even install them if you promise to let us come watch you use them. We're always up for some real entertainment.

Do you want the water tanks or were you just trying to throw a scare into the OP?
Sounds to me like he has his act together pretty well and smart-### comments from people with nothing valuable to contribute probably won't do him much good

If u have a air pressure application gauge on ur truck . hold it at 10psi and that is enough brake pressure to hold u , and still light enough for the break drums to be able to spread the heat across the drums without smoking.provided u are in the right gear. If u need anymore pressure than that then drop a gear and try again.

Not hard to put Jake's on that engine. Plenty of them had Jake's. Phone around to the salvage yards. Jake heads , pedestals, bolts and valve cover spacers.

    Why run it without.

I agree with this. You can perty much go down any hill with a steady 10psi application and not smoke the brakes. If you need more then that your going to fast. And for God sake dont be one them guys that fan the brakes , contrary to what they say , this will get you in trouble. Slow and steady gets it done.
