    So I worked retail for 15 years and had enough, kinda new to trucking and interested in my cdl maybe. Thinking about trade school, and maybe yard jockey since they pay decent or tanker driver. Kinda wandering how it will be kind backing up trucks starting out, I guess everybody starts somewhere. thanks

    Yard jockey jobs are a little rare for a new cdl holder, but not unheard of.
    Tankers; plenty of companies that hire new cdl school grads.
    Where is your location?

    The trucking companies hire CDL people right out of school?

    That's where I was born & raised; Robertson County.
    R. E. West has free cdl school and no contract to sign.
    TLD Logistics has cdl school in Crossville & Knoxville. I think they haul auto parts for Toyota and some other contracts.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A & R Transport is tanker and hires from accredited private cdl schools.
    Welcome to the game. U think ur getting out of retail by coming to trucking but now u will be involved with retail more than u ever dreamed of by driving a truck . them warehouse ppl can be real pricks sometimes. Be a cool kid and pull a flatbed or tanker and stay away from them retail and grocery warehouses . ur in a great freight area in tenesee, its alot of companies will give u training for free down there if u work for them for a year. Backing up is just understanding physics and how ur trailer reacts to ur trucks movement. Most of trucking is about physics and time managment. U got to understand physics to keep from crashing into anything and u got to understand time management to be able to plan ur pickup and delivery times under the limitations of elogs. Its a good industry to get into if ur looking for a stable job where u are left alone to ur own devices. As long as u like a new challenge everyday and are able to adapt to ever changing situations then u will be fine
    LTL companies' dock-to-driver programs might be a good fit here. See if
    FedEx Freight
    Old Dominion
    Saia
    Estes
    R&L
    Central Transport
    UPS Freight
    ABF
    YRC
    or others are hiring dockworkers. It's the best way to get your CDL and real practical experience--earn while you learn!
    Ive heard tankers hire new grads but why would they do that? It seems like a job you would want experience for but I guess not. So you can get a tanker job if youre new but alot of dry van companies want 3 years experience? Wouldnt tanker be harder to drive and more risky?
    Tanker is easy. That's where the money is. Tanker companies wouldn't be hiring new cdl school grads if they weren't a proven asset to the company.
    Where are you in Texas; maybe you're in the hiring area for some tanker outfits.
    There's lots of decent reefer outfits in Texas also.
    FlaSwampRat and Gumboslef9384 Thank this.
