I bought my own truck and leased onto an intermodal company here in NJ pulling loads out of the railyard. Things would be good except... the pay. I'm hitting $600 a day. Minus tolls, diesel, truck expenses it just doesn't make much financial sense. I grossed $3100 running 5.5 days last week. Take home- $1350 after taxes and all expenses. Trying to hit a steady $800 a day at this company is like pulling teeth. They give me a $400 load and then I get hit with some $200 load. That's every day. Asking for better paying loads hasn't helped. I pull JB and Schneider boxes for them. It looks like things will not change here any time soon.
I have to gross $4000 during a 5 day week in 12h or less. Is that too much to ask for? Am I way in over my head with my projected income?
I run local and I want to keep it that way. The plan is to learn the gig and put a driver in the truck. For that, I have to make enough to pay the guy a decent liveable wage. I dont wanna be one of those guys who screws over drivers because I've been there myself as a driver.
Any idea who I should lease onto to hit my $800/ day, running local goal?
I called XPO twice, and heard back nothing. CSX is my next step, but are they any good?
I've also highly considered getting my own authority to pull loads from DrayNow but I have not been able to reach them at all. Insurance cost at $1300 a month scares me a little bit... I dont have to do intermodal. I'm open to anything as long as its local. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

P.S. My steady expanses for truck, ins, and maintenance are $644 per week. The rest is cost of diesel, DEF, taxes.

Intermodal isn’t a steady game, so many moving parts, that all need to align perfectly for it to come together, we have days when we can’t catch a breath, then the next, ships delayed and our schedule gets thrown to hell.

Question is how many miles are you running to make your $6-800 a day? I’ve got some of my guys running less than 50 miles a day, and take home $500, it’s all relative.

For me it's been quite steady so far. $600 or less. One day was $1,300 but the hours to make that happen... I won't even go there.

Some days I do 250 miles, other days its 550 miles. I average around $2.20-$2.80 gross per mile. Live unloads are the worst. Some are 40 minutes, and others 3 hours or more.

I have a load for Monday. 200 miles
round trip for $360. That's with the FSC in that amount. The toll is $20. That's the money I get after the company takes its 30% cut off the top. 30% off an amount I don't know and will probably never find out.

I asked them recently for a single load a day. Single load for $800. No luck. They dont want us to run over 100 air miles. I suppose it's an insurance cost issue.

I'm at a point where if I cant gross $800 a day, I cant put a driver in the truck and grow. I'm stuck in this endless loop.

100 air miles is so they/you stay off ELD.

30% off the top again is pretty standard in intermodal, but you’d want to be paying next to nothing for insurance and your plates at that point.

If your grossing 2.20-2.80 all miles then your doing well, if thats your one way, then your low.

Yeah I figured out the ELD thing. Yet some guys here with the company have it and they're ok.

It's good to hear 30% is standard. I felt a little bit ripped off with that 30% at first. On top of that I pay bobtail ins for my truck and $130 a month to the company for occupational insurance.

The $2.20-$2.80 is per mile going to PA. Single run. 200 miles total. Average for the week is gonna be around $2, maybe a little less depending on what runs I do for that week.

Overall the hours are crazy and the pay is always on the low end. I gotta cover my own tolls too which can cost up to $450 on any given week. That's while doing everything to avoid the turnpike. If I was to avoid it completely I would be over my hours every day.

I ran intermodal up there. I quit and did over the road flatbed. You can do tanker out of rahway with QC, they may be able to keep you local. Cc cob you will go over the road , they don't have much local

Doing day job intermodal or cans off the piers in Jersey is a real rat race and long hours. I’d ask for regional runs where I could run the road a little bit but that is just me. Lots of cheap trucks in Elizabeth and Newark that hog all the short haul work and drive the rates into the crapper. But those guys are afraid to run the road and go by an open scale house (for good reason).
