10-4 driver. They always get pulled over all the time. I pass them and give them the double horn salute lol. Yea I’ve been running the 285 Loop for the last few years now and I’m tired of it. So running I-10 will be a nice change for now.

Almost because they cut me off all the time. I don’t know what it is with those guys and they are all old they need some fresh young drivers to take over. Them guys look like a couple of breaths from dying lol. Just kidding. I do see a lot of Averitt Drivers. I don’t know if they are shuttle drivers or not. They hard to tell because unlike every other LTL company their LTL drivers are called shuttle drivers and they don’t pull pups they pull 53’ trailers. I see team trucks as well so that’s a hard question to ask. But I do run into a lot of their trucks. Now I will say this they do have pretty nice pay package for their teams but you have to come to them with a team already established. They won’t find a team partner for you within the company. I’ve heard they do good as teams over there but I like my real LTL job over here at Cooper. I’ll never want to pull 53’ trailers again.

@Kstrong86 your not lying about most of the drivers at averitt are up in age.:D even when I used to work for them most of the drivers that been there for a long time will say averitt is a lax company that doesnt run you super hard just enough. I figure is a perk to attract older folks to fill their seats.

If you don’t mind me asking, what made you make the decision to leave them? I had an opportunity to work for them but I was hesitant on going to TN just for Orientation. I’m at a point in my life where if the interview and orientation is not done in the same city where I live I’m not going for it. Simply because if it doesn’t work out or feel right I’m not far from home and I didn’t quit my job or waste my vacation days on something that didn’t work out

I left averitt because dispatch was messing with my money and I just decided to leave in good terms. I was doing city P&D for averitt but during the interview dispatch never disclosed about having two types of runs which is regular city P&D and LC (Load Custom).

When I transfer from regional averitt to local averitt I didnt have any experience on the LTL side, dispatch started me as a LC driver which basically you go to customer A get the 53ft loaded all the way and deliver to customer B. Easy work really but it only pays 21.50 an hour.

As the time continued I was getting my experience and I started doing regular city P&D along with LC runs, my raises kicked in at that point I was at $24.25 but very often I will be assigned to an LC run which would only pays $21.50 I would take about 3 hours with customer come back to the yard and be given a city run which would put me back at my regular rate. In other words out my 11 hours 3 of those hours were paid at $21.50 and the rest of my hours at $24.25.

I was already at averitt for almost 3 years counting my regional time to local. I didnt wanted to leave and start all over again but I didnt like how they were messing with my money so I left averitt in good terms to Old Dominion. Management was very salty due to me putting my two weeks and offered me one more dollar to stay I kindly declined:D.

Overall averitt is a decent place to work at, then again everyone experiences are very different. One thing to mention is I really did learned how to back up in tight spots thanks to averitt since pretty much all they have is 53ft with twin screws.:D 20180126_094535.jpg

Thank you for that feedback. I will keep that in mind for future possibilities if that may happen to me. Averitt does sound like a wonderful place as long as they don’t mess with your money like you said bouncing you around. It should be one pay scale not the other way around like you put it. Man that is some tight backing. I’ve been in some situations like that but with a sleeper so I know that struggle. It’s amazing how they design these buildings with out considering how they are going to get their delivery’s smh.

I’m enjoy my day off. Packing and getting ready to go back on the road tomorrow. Last week of going back up to Chicago and back and then it’s all I-10 back and forth next week gentlemen. Vacation run. No traffic and 8.5 hour drive for the next year until the next bid. So exited can’t wait

So far the hardest part is getting to know new people. Everyone has been very willing to help out when I have questions, but each of them have their own way of doing things so it has been a little lacking with consistency. And dock work- that’s my least favorite part of the job. Something about spending 4-5 hrs in the morning going full speed breathing all that black gold doesn’t appeal to me. But hey, can’t complain. I feel like work ends when we leave on our route, as that’s the fun part for me. Other than that, I’ve been learning a lot about the different routes and stops. I keep hearing I’ll get the city route which includes downtown and frankly, I’m all for it. I enjoy the cluster of pedestrian and auto traffic that really stretch the nerves out sometimes. A fair bit of it is blind-side backing from two or three lanes so it gets exciting! As far as the manual labor portion of the work, it’s the least physical job I’ve had. Good bunch of folks so far to work with and I’m taking a fair bit of good natured ribbing from the senior guys but that comes with the territory haha. How are you guys?
