Superior Carriers, my experience.

Yeah, I've been in IT support for 20+ years and have been laid off three times each time b/c my entire departments functionality was outsourced either to India ( twice ) or Mexico ( the last time in May of this year ). The last two layoff were in the last 15 months and yest both jobs were in the mid-$50k range but that doesn't matter when they give you the 90 day notice and then force you train your replacement in another country w/ virtually non-existent labor laws and therefore will earn about 1/3 of your pay.

There's a couple of dirty secrets about IT work that most people outside of the industry don't know:
1. If you're on the software support side either in terms of coding or processing support your at the mercy of the greatest strength and greatest boon of computer networking ( i.e. the global internet ) means that your job can be done remotely from just about anywhere in the world an internet connection and cheap office space can be provided. That makes it more than easy for companies to chase the cheapest labor. Don't believe it? If you're in a support role that can work remotely from home, you've already proven your job can work remotely from anywhere, like the other side of the planet. It's just a matter of time.

2. If you're on the hardware support side most companies will look at as a glorified PC mechanic. Most desktop support folks tend to make in the $15 - $20 /hr range even after several years. Some do a bit better depending on experience and certifications but the work is not particularly rewarding. The hours are long and you're mostly invisible until someone has a problem w/ their computer and they're angry and frustrated and want if fixed 10 minutes ago! There's a reason why Help Desk and Desktop support roles have abnormally high turn over rates compared to most other industries ( except trucking it would seem ).

IT work just isn't the panacea of middle class income stability it's been billed to be. I've seen it for 20 years and I'm sick of it so after the last layoff I decided I was out! When I start looking around for a new career path it was hard to not notice there's a crap ton of open CDL jobs on all of the job boards. I'm a gearhead at heart and trucks have always been something I've been fascinated by so I figured now is a good time to give this a shot. As far as the isolation goes, for at least half of my IT support career I've worked nights on solo support shifts so I'm used to working alone and making the most of my own company. I'm not necessarily excited about being MIA from my family but I'm hoping to find a descent regional gig that will get me home at least a couple of time per week.

 

no he wasn't. Didn't even stop. I did have a breakdown(well 2 tire blowout) on US35 about month and a half ago. Sitting on the side of 35 WITH repair guy. Here comes a Superior pulls over and gets out....even the mechanic was asking, what is this guy doing? I flagged him to keep going...NO NEED IN BEING a 'snoop'. I really hate 'nosey' drivers. If I need help, I have a good cell phone and a good plan...I'll call and get in touch with someone.

 

I can understand. That's how I got into driving. did marble/granite work for 10 years. After the 3rd layoff I was done and it was time to switch careers. Plus, alot of 'foreigners' without proper documents were mainly the ones working there, with very little pay. first 8 years I made really good money and then the housing market crashed and I was laid off(1st time), and it spiraled down from there. Turned out it's a deadend sweat shop of a job. Plus, they are all moving to CNC to do the countertops. I have CNC experience as I took a machining class in high school, but those positions are taken up QUICK in that sector of it. I did help program a few kitchens, but you know how that goes, in a small shop, people find out you know more then them and they get rid of you quick. Isn't 'right to work' great? GRRRRRR

 

What driving School did you go to Roadmaster?

 

Yeah, you can only get bashed in the head so many times before you realize you're just not wanted and it's time to move on and do something different. Honestly after getting laid off in May and shortly after deciding trucking was the way I wanted to go, given my druthers I would have been in a truck by now but the truck driving school I choose at the local CC had a three month waiting list so I won't be able to start until next month and won't finish until mid-December. Hopefully I'll be on the road by the beginning of next year. Still looking at Superior as my #1 choice so perhaps I'll see you out there!

 

I'll admit this, this is, by far the best paying OTR company to get on with. However, LTL pays alot more, and you're in a hotel every night, I really do like it here. It's a big company, but has a small company 'feel' to it. I've met most of the guys out of High Point, only once for 90% of them. haha

 

What's ltl and does this company have it.

 

LTL stands for less than load. More then 1 delivery location loaded on same trailer, basically

I heard that superior Carrier's is for sale, any truth to that. Thanks
