Hey all!, very new to the whole trucking thing. Have to throw out a bit of background for this question though. Tried college, flunked out. Tried military, couldn't do it. Trucking has so far been the best thing I've found at 22 years old. It's great; but with my mess-ups in the past I can only see it as my last chance before I end up making minimum wage until I die.

I found a decent contractor under FedEx that pays great (to me) and the run I'm set up on is for teams.
Getting from the hub to drop off is about 16 hours one way. We repeat that twice, then run a smaller 8 hour one way trip. Weekends off.

So my question is, I was told it would be a lot easier to split the clock. So I would log in on Qualcomm, start my 11, drive only 6 of it, then swap out with my teammate, who drives 5 hours on my name to finish my clock while I take a nap or break or whatever. We cycle back and log in on the teammates 11, I run 5, she runs 6.

It seems like a relatively fair and easy rotation, with short drive times for those not durable enough to handle 11 straight; but isn't this illegal? I just got my CDL back in June and really have no intention of having DOT take it away before I get a year in because someone can't handle how trucks are supposed to run.

On top of this, the smaller 8 hour one way trip. My soon to be partner has a child at home and doesn't want to run it because she wants weekends with the kid. (Boo hoo, I have a child and am a trucker) That's fine, I can take the full mileage pay for that route. Being around a 16 hour trip, I can't do it in one clock, and was recommended to log in on her time even though she isn't in the truck to run it in one day.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I just fled a company paying .38cpm where they would refuse to repair things like missing mud flaps, and scaling the trailers was on my dime. It didn't feel right. Everything about this new company is perfect for me so far minus this expectation to split HOS.

Nope. They abolished split sleeper back about 2005 or so with the current HOS.

As a team we run out our full 10 hours then it's the spouse's turn to do her 10. We had the option then in that HOS era to split sleeper or rhythm method until the 70 hour workweek was up.

So with the current laws it is 10 hours driver A, 10 hours driver B; no legal way around it?
The DOT would frown on this 5-6-6-5 split?

No. You had better not be caught driving on someone else's clock or vice versa. That's a MAJOR violation of HOS and if you are being asked to run your team as you described, then RUN from at "opportunity" to screw up your trucking career.

The RIGHT way to split the clock is each of you gets a 12 hour shift. That gives each of you a solid 12 hours in the sleeper berth. You can drive your 11 hours and that leaves an hour to work in your fueling, mandatory 30 minute break, or quick stops to take a piss.

The best thing to do is agree on which shift each of you want to do, then STICK to that schedule, even during your days off. You DON'T want to start getting "jet lagged" by constantly changing your sleep schedule.

My brother and I drove quite a bit of team. We took our shift changes at midnight or noon. I started my shift at midnight and he started his shift at noon.

Once again, do NOT run team splitting the schedule as you described.

In 2001 yes. Your HOS says 11 hours then sleeper until your codriver is finished his 11.

They would put you OOS for 5-6-6-5.

As a team as stated by Lepton1 Spouse handled the morning as I handled the night. Once in a while she is requires to run at night. No ifs buts or maybes, HOS flips a human sleep from night to day and back. Besides you never really sleep. That truck is part of your soul as as long she is rolling well, you rest but never sleep.

Our esteemed Government has managed to take away where at all possible any ability of YOU as captain of the ship to make decisions on how to drive and sleep that truck. And so... you are stuck. You have a 11 hour day to run. 14 max. Then your codriver has his 11 and 14 max. You have nothing. Except laying in the bunk to sleep which for many of us as we get older is not needed.

As I read it from this post, the truck owner and/or team mate are asking you to run a 6/5/6/5 split schedule? If so it sounds like one of two things:

    1. They are clueless regarding how HOS works.

    2. They know how HOS works, but don't want to run legally.

And that would be a whole another problem.

There are anti corection laws dating to 2012 that should protect you from running illegally for anyone. I don't care if it is the Pope. Its still illegal. That will change the conversation quite a bit.

How I received it from my team mate was "That's just how we run it because it's easier. We let the boss know it's happening and he edits whatever he has to in the system to make it legal."

I can only guess they are in the boat of "The regulation changed and it was a stupid change, so let's do it anyways."
