under 26k new plates for truck & trailer?

Those of you running your personal truck for under 26k set up. Did you have to get new commercial plates for the truck and trailer?

My truck being a F350 the state already made me get commercial plates if I recall when I registered it to my name prior to doing my number. Now I'm getting told I need to re-register it.. It's already registered at 25,999lbs. Is it true I still need to re-registered for interstate? This is what OOIDA just told me.

If so do I also need to re-register the trailer? I was under the assumption that if I was under 26k that I used normal registration being I don't have appropriated plates. (I'm in FL if that helps on the answer)

 

Yea I will be, but sometimes DMV people don't know the right answers and then you end up paying more than you should and still get it wrong.. Hence why I wanted to ask here because people here have obviously already dealt with this before.

I mean my truck already has a commercial tag and it's rated to 25,999. I don't see why I'd need anything different for interstate because I'm not under IFTA regs.

 

Ok these people are absolutely ####ing nuts.. I go to my local DMV they tell me I'm fine.. but to call the state MC office to verify.. I call the state office and the woman is arguing with me telling me I need apportioned plates and have to do IFTA.

I tell her no, I do not have to do IFTA that's the entire reason I'm staying under 26,001 lbs.. She then tells me I'm wrong and I need it as well as apportioned plates on a truck "UNDER" 26001..


Seriously WTF.. how is it everyone has a different answer? How is it miss 27 years at her state office doesn't understand the concept of under 26,001 lbs = no IFTA? Why does OOIDA not understand this? The dumb woman at the state office, actually hung up on me, because I told her no I don't need IFTA and I don't need apportioned plates on a truck registered at 25,999.


IRP -International Registration Plan is the registration required for vehicles over 26,000 pounds that cross state lines. Also known as Apportioned Plates and Prorate Account. IFTA is the fuel tax decals and license for the same vehicles.

Who is required to have IRP and IFTA?

An IRP and IFTA account is required for companies that have vehicles crossing state lines that are over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or have 3 or more axles on the power unit.


How much more obvious is it that that? ^^^ That I do not need it.. There is no "interstate" clause for anything under 26001.. It is strictly a weight requirement for over..

In Florida, power units are the only vehicles that must have apportioned registrations.

IRP is for apportionable vehicles, defined as commercial motor vehicles engaged in interstate commerce (i.e., operating in more than one jurisdiction) with power units that meet one of the following criteria:

• Have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds; or
• Have three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
• Are used in combination with a trailer for a combined GVW that is over 26,000 pounds.

IRP is a reciprocal agreement, meaning that when the vehicle is registered in the jurisdiction where the motor carrier is based, the registration is valid in all the other IRP member jurisdictions. Additionally, the IRP registration is “apportioned” because the fees paid to the base jurisdiction are divided among all the member jurisdictions in which the vehicle(s) operated. IRP member jurisdictions are the the lower 48 states, the District of Columbia, and the 10 Canadian provinces.

 

Ok, I contacted OOIDA to see why they needed me to change my registration and now they say it ok..
.. I spent the day dealing with State workers for nothing...
