Just did Memphis to Rolla, MO recently and experienced the many hills and curves of the Ozarks. I-55//270/64/70/29 is 60 miles longer. I figure the interstate would be faster.
Which way would you go?

You need horsies for the Ozarks. One way or another you will get up there.
Follow your dispatchers routing to avoid out of route charges or so forth.
What the interstate does offer a margin of safety in these hills. You don't have to worry if you come over the small hill or come out of a curve that someone or somethng is in your way on the smaller roads. I generally go interstate. But once in a while Ive had to run through the woods around here with a big rig. With big horse engines its not hard to do. -
After some thought I offer you a third option.
40 west to Lonoke, 31 north to Beebe, at the railroad crossing in town (Dual main line, there is a 30 mph curve at the city housing dev just inside limits) make left on 64, (Make sure once you commit to the rail crossing you do not stop and leave trailer hanging over the railroad. If the lights and bells go off you have about 35 seconds to get the hell off there before 80 mph trains blast through.
No matter what, stay on this road through the school zone and through the lights over the 67 expressway keep going west for Conway, Elpaso etc. You will find 64 opening up to a decent expressway for a while until Conway.
This part of 64 between Beebe and Conway is a big time trucking bypass for Little Rock for traffic between St Louis and Oklahoma I-40 etc. it saves so much aggravation and gives you a pretty ride through the valley.
Turn right to go north on highway 65 at Conway, once you get clear of the city its should be a good ride through the hills until Joplin Mo. They have 4 lane sections here and there on that road now. Just be careful through the towns like Clinton etc. Law Enforcement and traffic is difficult in school hours mainly. But eventually you will be in Joplin with options for Omaha.JC1971 Thanks this. -
