Get a cheap flashlight in a truck stop and tape it above the plate. Should last until the sun comes up.

Incorrect. Only required lights have to work, and a license plate lamp on a trailer would be required. Extra chicken lights not so much.

To the OP a battery powered like would not meet the requirements of 393.23.
    393.23 Power supply for lamps.
All required lamps must be powered by the electrical system of the motor vehicle with the exception of battery powered lamps used on projecting loads.

Battery powered might be illegal during an inspection, but the two things a rolling law enforcement officer first looks for as a reason to stop someone are the seat belt being used during daylight and the license plate lit up at night.

In a pinch, a small flashlight aimed on the plate and some duct tape would probably work til daylight to get er fixed.

and SteveScott must type with two fingers. :)

I have been written up for a license plate during an inspection once, that particular did not have one or even a place to putone that didn't already have a light there. I don't have a clue how many inspections I had gone through before that without it ever been mentioned. I have never been pulled over in a big truck because the license plate light didn't work, and truthfully, if I pick up a trailer during the night, it is not something I am going to waste any more time that maybe writing it down on the pretrip.

Entitled company driver words of wisdom right there. Trying to teach your boss a several hundred dollar lesson over a license plate light is pretty douchy if you ask me (not that anyone did)

While that is true about required lights. It does not stop them from stopping you because non required lights are inop. Ohio, Mich. Like to use the license plate light excuse when fishing for overloads.

Well, the license plate light is a required light though. So they are still only getting you for required lights, not extras.

Bean Jr., kylefitzy and jamespmack Thank this.

The irony is, tractors are equipped with rear license plate lights but many states only issue 1 plate and require it on the front where there is no light requirement.
