@Lysdexis : Cutting weight and large cars aren't a good combination. I've done enough reading to know that if you want a nice truck, you are going to be sacrificing a lot of payload space.

    Want to cut weight?

Old truck: Get a C-12 CAT or E-7 Mack for a motor. 2070 lbs and 2142 lbs dry weight respectively, compared to the 2867 lbs of a 3406E, 2625 lbs of a N14 or 2900 lbs of a 14L Series 60 Detroit. That extra, almost 800 lbs of space is a big money difference in bulk-land. Fuel economy will be a wash with the old motors.

New truck: 13 litre motor will save about 500 lbs versus a 15 litre. The new Cummins X-12 (max 500hp/1700lbft) weighs a hair over 2000lbs dry. This is a game-changer I am surprised hasn't taken the bulk world by storm (almost 1000 lbs savings on the X15). If you want to maximize payload space, you are going to pay through the nose for every aluminum option there is.

Further cuts: Centrifuse brake drums weigh about 100 lbs less than standard drums. Aluminum rims weigh 40 lbs less than steel. Aluminum fifth wheel will save 90 lbs. Aluminium clutch housing will save 50 lbs.

The absolute lightest large car I've ever encountered is a MX-13 powered 389 with the 48" flat top (36" would be even less), 18-speed (13-speed would be less), all aluminum cross members, bell housing and fifth wheel with Flex-air suspension. 16,741 lbs dry weight as stamped. Load it up with fuel, coolant and oil and you are still looking at the 18,000-18,250 mark.

Bulk is a world of sacrifice, always has been, which is why so many tend to run overweight and risk the ticket.

EDIT: Looking through my notes, I had written an example down of a Peterbilt 567 with the X15 and 18-speed with the 56" flat top sitting at about 18,500 lbs stamped. Swap in the X12, 13-speed and all aluminum stuff and you'll probably be in the 17,250 dry stamped range.

That’s straw and no we don’t have enough. Could probably sell 2 or 3 x that amount. There’s about 425 tons exposed to the elements there now. I hope we can get a new roof on there quick because I don’t want to move it.

This was the lightest large unit I ever drove...Mid to high 28’s empty weight depending on fuel level..Series 60, 18 speed, 3.36 rears, coffin sleeper, small tanks, with a Mac half round behind it..

*edit* disc brakes truck and trailer

25 ton in the bucket all day long *legal*.. :confused3:
