The little truckstop back home bought a Ky chicken and taco bell franchise and did away with the cook to order restaurant. I told the manager when this was in the works, that it was a bad idea, truckers wanted to sit down and have a real meal, with a waitress. After it was in, and the billboard up on the interstate, I could not believe how many I would hear on the cb say they were stopping for one or the other, I thought I was wrong, but a year and a half later, it cost them big bucks to buy out the remaining time on their franchise contract, to go back to what they had, it seemed the bottom line was way off in truck stop profits.

TA/Petro has added 94 of their Country Pride/Iron Skillets to the restaurants of the past in exchange for IHOP. It is a bottom line effort to reduce their costs and collect money for outside restaurants for leasing the restaurant space. It has nothing to do with the travelling public just pure profit and cutting costs. Flying J did it years ago when they closed their great company owned restaurants for Denny's and nothing changed except the operating hours. We are doomed to the fast food eating travelling public and corporate greed.

one reason was for the extra monies coming into the place.
truckers by and large only stop to fuel up and sleep.
yes of course truckers eat as well, but then comes tipping. most truckers do not tip the usual 17% or 20%, and those that do, are few and far between.
where as the general traveler tips going rates.
no all this can be debatable and i'm sure many will.
but the fact of the matter is that there are more sources of revenue to be made by the general public than truckers.
fuels (gasoline and diesel) are sold at slim profit margins, those travel plazas depend on the constant flow of vehicle traffic to sustain them.
many travelers simply pull in, use the rest rooms, gas up, and maybe eat a quick meal. they are not going to be staying there for a 10 hour break or 34 hour reset.
those travelers will not be taking along a cooking plate or a mini fridge. they may take along beverages though.
so now you take a trucker with his own supply of food, and stays at the travel plaza for 10 hours. in that 10 hours, a couple of dozen travelers would have stopped in, gassed up, ate and take off....
it's a quick turn around profit for the truckstops, over the truck drivers, taking up space, and not adding to the economic profitability of that truck stop/travel plaza.FlaSwampRat, Dave_in_AZ, gentleroger and 3 others Thank this. -
I’m all for IHOPs are replacing the Country Pride’s, since they’ve run most of the family restaurants out. Much better option

I have not eat at one for years, but at one time I knew where there were several golden corrals between Ks and Tx, that I could get a truck to and did on a regular basis.

Quite simply put, when the T/S started giving rather "large discounts" to companies buying fuel at their "chains"...the DRIVERS have had to be charged for EVERYTHING!!!...Remember the "free" coffee, fax, showers, phone calls, tire checks, oil checks, fuel while you go pee??..Now they have to charge "all" for something that was included in fuel price.
