I suppose that if that were the case I'd have to deal with it...But thankfully it's not!

You guys are turning a profitable situation into a big deal you have no control of, and frankly is not any of the drivers business. The company is not requesting you to pay the lumper they are paying and the price range is agreed to up front. Heres the deal there is no reason for the driver not to make 200 to 300 bucks for unloading the load. The company will pay you the same maybe more as long as they do not know there paying there own driver.

Call your company and tell them they have to down stack and separate the load by item and you need a comchek for 350.00, they tell you to see if you can get a better price, second call you tell them you talk them down to 275.00, and 99 percent of the time you get a check number right them. Simply make a cheep investment at Staple and buy several receipt book of different style and types sop they do not get used to seeing a specific receipt attached to your BOL or expense report. You just have to come up with a name and address for the lumper. You can figure that out.

Bottom line you just made 275.00 for less than 4 hours of your time. 68.75 per hour I would wager to say is more than you make per hour driving down the road. Keep track of the extra income so you can of course claim it at the end of the year being a honest tax paying driver and all.

I have made as much as 1200.00 extra in a given month. Multi stop loads are even better.

Now if you consider debating this with your company do not They will screw you as a matter of policy. Most companies will only pay 50 to 75 dollars for a full load, now keep in mind they already have a negotiated rate of 400 to 500 dollars for unloading, what they don't spend the keep as profit. Next time do not get made at the lumper, this is showing your ignorance, get mad at the company you work for that is turning a profit screwing you, while your busting your butt for them... And remeber do not get mad get even. Justice is best served cold. cha-ching al the way to the bank.

CDL does NOT mean Combination Driver/Lumper! my part was to drive from point A to point B. not my problem to unload/sort someone else's freight!

I heard of that being done with plastic pipe at a Home Depot. "you missed your appointment" so after some arguing there was a pile of pipe in the parking lot.

I've never owned or pulled a reefer and this is just one more reason I'll never touch one. Everytime I hear stories like this I always think that the "walking floor" or the trash transfer trailers with the hydaulic ram in the front is the cure for lumper fees! If I ever win the lottery I'm doing it with a video camera to record the whs employees faces as 40k lbs of whatever comes ramming it's way onto or in front of their dock. HAHA

Couldn't you set up a side company and write the comcheck to yourself?

I've never actually had to do that though. There's only been two places that complained about not setting an appointment ahead of time (like I care that the sheet says to call ahead, that's not my job). The blank stare has worked every time. Try it out, I want to know if it's just me. When they complain just stare at them without a thought in your head until they do something, don't even twitch.

You could, but then they would make more money in a couple of hours then most drivers make all week. Drivers don't get fat because they are willing to work. Same reason they can't find jobs. We get them all the time at our company and when they find out we actually work for the money we get paid they go running back to a sleeper in a truck stop where no one will expect them to do anything except complain and get fatter by the day.

While I agree the fees are not a big deal. It most certianly is a big deal to the owner op or company driver who is told he must contract the unloading out....yet has no say in who the unloading is contracted out to.

By forcing anyone to contract with a predetermined service. You imply control of said job. Which leads to a direct violation of the term "contract labor/services" for tax reporting issues.

When the government gets a full look at lost revenue, and they will at some point in the future. There will be hell to pay at every level.

Anyone who doesn't have a problem with the fees that these places charge I would like you to try something for me. I've heard of lumper fees and gate charges and some of you just say "charge it to the company". Fine, order a pair of shoes and when the little brown UPS truck comes to your house, stop him at the end of the driveway. Then tell him he has to pay the $10.00 gate charge and then it's an additional $200 so YOU can unload the box YOU ordered. Then he also has to pay so you will take each shoe out of the box and stack them separately. And when he gets done laughing and drives out please get back on here and tell us how it worked out for you. If more companies did that these stupid fees would stop.
