hi everyone. i found some cascadias 2010-2012 and so. Local mechanics put 1997-1998 engines on these trucks. The trucks working on the road fine but there are no stickers on the engine. They are eld exempt because of the engine years but there is no way to prove it because neither freightliner nor detroit give out those stickers anymore. Moreover, dot requires the carrier company of the glider kit truck to carry the documents related to the manufacture of the glider kit and the engine work in the files. These trucks have none of these documents. This is the same issue for a lot of original glider kit trucks on the road, too. Most of them have no papers from the dealer who built them. When the officer stops you, how will they determine this engine is 1999 and older. I know the serial number is stamped on the block but i dont think he will take that number and run in a system and find out the year. Probably he will give a warning and will ask the company to prove the engine is eld exempt but most companies dont have any papers for this. What do you guys think about this issue? I know this is an issue not known by many people so can you make some research before answering. Thanks.

You can get the build date with the serial number. The dot will never get it for you, you will have to run that down your self.
ChicagoJohn, Dino soar and truckdriver31 Thank this. -

I don't know about that, but I know cummins and cat, can tell you where and when an engine was built by the serial number on the block, I would imagine detroit can too.
AModelCat and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -

I don't know that it's legal to do that.
I know there has been a lot of discussion about it because the regulations seem to to say it's the year of the engine that dictates whether it is ELD exempt... But I don't think that repowering a truck is the same as it being a glider.
As far as I know any truck that has Emissions on it you cannot just put an older engine in it and call it a glider.
It may be why those trucks are sold without any documentation.
If it were legal, I would think it would be no thing for the local shop to give you certification that they created a glider.
But like I said, I don't believe that repowering the truck is the same as it being a glider.
At least in the state of Pennsylvania, all gliders are reconstructed vehicles. They have a reconstructed title and I believe the VIN number ends in GL.magoo68, Onemanshow, Old Man and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don't know who told you the stickers are unavailable. Freightliner cannot give them out, they did not build the engine.
There is a procedure a Detroit Diesel dealer follows to get a replacement decal. It costs $150 and must be installed by the dealer after they determine the EPA model year of the engine.
There are many cases where the existing decal becomes illegible and must be replaced. -
When does the pre-2000 model year exception apply? -
