There are some forehands in driving a manual transmission truck, mostly experienced old-school drivers prefer them. If you are not a fan of driving a stick gear car, you may want to get a restriction on your CDL license to automatics only.

Most mega companies (those that hire newbies with less than 1-2 years of experience, you will most likely start by driving for one of those) order only automated-transmission new trucks these days. There is not much future in manual trans. trucks, automatics are improving on fuel economy, electric trucks are coming. Manual trans. truck will have a longer use in places such as Canada where the snow season lasts longer.

Getting a manual trans. truck usually means getting an older truck. I was told having no restrictions will open more opportunities but the only difference I've seen driving for the mega companies is I was being given old trucks in very poor condition, all manual trans. trucks I've been given had 300,000+ or 500,000+ miles on them. I ended up asking for automated-transmission trucks and had a better luck getting newer trucks in better condition.

Convoy Transport offered me a position with a manual transmission truck, I asked for an automatic, recruiter said the newer trucks (automatics) were being given to the drivers who were with the company for a longer period of time. Since those experienced company drivers skipped taking Convoy's manual transmission trucks, sounded like those trucks are old wracks they give to newbies.

That one year contract is your training time and you are getting paid for. It is not such a bad deal as everyone makes it out to be.

What better incentive is there for a company to train you right than to be the company that actually employs you?

Schools that you pay for only need to get you to pass the CDL test and they get their money, then they care nothing else about you.

I had only a six-month contract with CR England, they did not pay a whole lot but they sure trained good and 6 months later I am making four figures each week with the same company I'm still working at 6 years later.

If you go the community college way and are independent, there are dairy facilities in West Point and Norfolk which might have something. Lots of outside common carriers, but it would be a good place to look for carrier names if you want to do tanker.

SCC's program is $1,095.00. Books, tuition and fees. I think Lincoln would be the closest campus for you.

I've never heard of such a low tuition. I'm assuming this is for truck driver training. What is the full name of this community college?

Is Crete a good company to work for. I've read some negative things about Werner but you never know if that's true.
