Do companies hire new drivers, or do they simply manifest with 2 years experience

3-5 years to drive a dump truck?????

Half those idiots can't drive for ####. Some of the biggest threats to public safety on the highways in Alberta from my experience.

Yessir!! Those would be the "Bottom Feeders". If you want to work for a decent name gravel outfit, they wanna see 3-5. Its literally one extreme to the next, no experience or 3-5 years.

Also the lack of drug testing in Canada, the booze, drugs and general "condition" of some of there people is mind blowing. I ran articulated haul truck at a couple big sites in Calgary, a couple summers, and the gravel truck drivers were worse than the dirt monkeys lol.

Agreed, I tried dump truck for a week and the guy training me would roll weed driving down the road. Told me that majority of dump truck drivers take drugs, I got out of that quick.

Tazziee left challenger in BC because of slow work I believe. @TheStopSignGuy still works at challenger out of Cambridge but he's pretty fed up.

I left mostly due to miles/crappy east coast runs. I don't think there's anywhere that's safe right now.

Best bet for OP is just keep looking, I'm unfamiliar with western markets so I can't put in any feedback there.

I'm assuming you're in the Vancouver Area then? If that's the case, your best bet is TransX/CanXpress, IHaul, CPX/Versacold.

IDK how TransX out of Calgary is doing, but out of Winnipeg it's absolutely horrible. No freight. People in office losing jobs left and right. Losing major contracts in Midwest USA. It feels as if the company is gonna go bankrupt lol.

In Calgary area actually. I looked into ihaul and they have a mentorship program. Versacold wants experience despite having the lowest rates I've seen on this job search.

Have you tried Canada Cartage? They hire fresh recruits with little experience. They pay terrible, but sometimes you need to sacrifice income for experience. When I first started in 92, I applied at Hunterline in Edmonton, the owner literally laughed at my resume. He said minimum 3 yrs OTR, and 2 yrs mountain. Thinking back now... he more than likely saved my life by refusing me. He told me to start small ( city p&d with tandem vans) then work up towards super b. His advice taught me to respect the road, truck and the weights I was hauling. Today there is no respect in regards to size and weight. Greed and a quantity over quality mentality take priority. Both your and public safety take a distant second. Can anyone say Humboldt, SK?

There's plenty of BC (Lower Mainland) companies hiring. Check out the government job boards. No experience needed. Team work. Yeah that's right, you can have your new license for one day and they'll let you drive a truck that's 80k gross, or some will even let you ride 145k down the big grades in BC. The only catch is you better know how to speak another language, and be willing to be a slave.
