I ve owned 2 cats, a 425 3406b and a 6nz in my current truck. Both have been great to me. I've ran a good deal of N14s as well. Good reliable motors. It is really a toss up. I will say you cant be the sound of a 3406b sitting there idling. Especially when planted in an old Louisville with those loud quick release air brakes

Still have one in a 69 359 good engine.
Also have a 3406b in a kw.
6nz 600 in a 379
1693 in a 74 359 which is by far the best sounding engine there is.
My favorite is a12v92 in a 83 Pete which makes the 6nz feel like a 230 Cummins.
My point is they all have there advantages,
Like them all.MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
A properly tuned 6nz ecm is a monster, and yes I know I’ll catch heat for saying it. But I owned two, both filed to a minimum of 630 to the ground. Drove another in the bush. Where there are no roads. In northern Ontario. And I don’t mean Barrie. Drove n14s. They were great motors too. So were pre emissions ISX 500’s. Pulled super b trains and very comparable to a mildly tuned 6nz. But my preference will always be a filed 6nz by Davenport diesel. Amazing power. Amazing fuel mileage. For a cat.

Kind of like a muffled fart.
A friend of my dad's had an old Ford truck from the fifties. That truck gave the most perfect airbrake sound of anything.
Just a perfect "tche" sound.MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
I ran a 1999 379 with a tuned 6NZ. The intake and turbo setup was aftermarket. Injector work. It was still set to 475hp and 1,850ftlbs. With a 13 speed. Little flat top 63 inch Pete, 280 wheel base on LP 22.5's and 3.25's. Pulling a 6,500 gallon West-Mark. That truck just ran good. My favorite truck I've ever driven. Tried to buy it off the boss. He wouldn't. I'd still be driving it. Ran from the Central Valley to Las Vegas. Or to St George Utah three times a week. That truck would do it to it.

What happened to the 13 year old OP? This kids stuff was classic to read and was funny to see him have people going for a few pages.
He must hang with some bar-stool pro's at the truck stops. By the time he ever really started driving he will have 2 million miles driven and was slinging milk in his B61 Mack with the 2 sticks.Northern Nomad Thanks this. -
I have always owned Cats, every time I see a hood open on the road...it's RED!
