The position of the crack on the head indicated to the shop that the problem with the cylinder liner was due to the crack. The other cylinders should be fine, but I have requested they verify that. I also asked if they can inspect the cylinder itself for issues. If they do find the cylinder is also a problem, and it might be, then I will consider more work than replacing one liner & cylinder.
I really do not want to sink 25K of my own money, or more, into a full engine rebuild if I can make the truck solidly functional for less. -
I could arrange to do additional work separately, but I do not want to invest an enormous amount of money into this truck if I can avoid it. -
You want to buy a brand new truck?

Think of it this way. If a wheel seal goes out you got to pull the tires, brake drum, and hub. The labor is already done so if the drum and shoes are worn you would go ahead and get new ones since 75% of the labor cost is already being spent.
They have the head off. They have the pan dropped. Now all that needs done is removing two bolts on the rod bearing cap then pushing the rod and piston up out of the liner, setting the liner tool in the hole and hitting it with an impact for 10 seconds to get the liner out.
You are looking at 1 hour labor per hole to remove the old and replace with new
Seriously man right now you are about 5 hours labor to have a rebuilt engine. Everything else is already being done under the warranty.loudtom, DieselDrivinDaddy, Eldiablo and 1 other person Thank this. -

What you need to be discussing with the service manager is the cost to you of doing 5 piston kits and rod and main bearings. The other things a rebuild would typically involve can be done later. Injectors/water pump/etc.Last edited: Dec 5, 2019

Spyder is pointing you in the right direction. You’ll have a fresh motor with someone else covering the majority of the cost.
As far as wanting to dump the truck. Sit down and do the math on how long it will take to save enough money, to be able to buy the truck you want paying cash. Then try to look at it as if someone else in your situation came to you asking for advice. As a business man would you tell him to dump a truck with a fresh motor because he can’t find a place to mount a microwave? Because the 5th wheel doesn’t slide? From where I sit those are foolish reasons to justify getting what you want. My grandma used to say “your want’s won’t hurt you, but your needs might “Brandonpdx, wore out, Farmerbob1 and 4 others Thank this.
