I have the book Old Dominion: Helping the World Keep Promises it came out in 2008 or 2009 I've read some of it, but it's worth another look. I'm guessing you work for Old Dominion?

Mike, I just read the DSNY thread. That was fascinating. I think you’re off base by saying there isn’t any interest in public works trucking

Mike2633, I can give you some help about Carolina Freight Carriers. The company was started by C. Grier Beam as Beam Trucking Co. in Cherryville NC IN 1932. The company took the name of Carolina Freight Carriers in 1936 and became a family busuness with the addition of his brother, Dewey, his wife and the Grier's wife. By 1958, Carolina operated 800 units out of 36 terminal located in 14 states along the eastern seaboard.

Carolina established Sea Highways Inc. in 1960 which was a roll-on roll-off trailer ship freight service connecting US and Canada with Central America. In 1963, Carolina became a publicly owned company. Between 1936 and 1984 the company bought 22 carriers the last ones being Cardinal Freight Carriers, G.I. Trucking and Red Arrow Freight lines those 3 ones being operated as subsidiaries of Carolina.

In 1995, just few months before its take over by ABF Carolina change its name for Worldway which got the structure of a holding overseeing Carolina , Cardinal, G.I. Red Arrow in addition to Caro Trans (international ocean transportation), Innnovative Logistics and The Complete Logistics Company.

Yes in 2001 Estes and the upper management of G,I. Trucking bought in partnership the company from ABF. Estes and G.I was already partner with two other carriers, Lakeville Motor
Express and TNT Overland Express in the regional LTL network ExpressLink since mid-90's.
Finally Estes bought the shares held by the G.I. management in 2005 and took the complete control of G.I.Trucking.
