I mean hell, I know it's going into winter... but I can't even put 2 partials together to get $2/mile out of FL. I say ok.. I'll check rates in GA, AL, MS,SC,NC and dead head to the best place.. I look at those states and again.. you can't even put together 2 partials to get $2/mile on most days it's the same crap there as well.
I mean FFS there are loads on the board that are 20' going to WA or CA for $1k-$1,7k.. That's over 3k miles and they aren't even paying a $1/mile.. I try to look at AL,MS,GA,SC,NC and it's the same there too.. so what the hell are you guys doing to survive this crap? I mean I can run and survive at $1/mile but I honestly don't want to waste my freaking time. Do you just take winter off?
Has anyone seen the freight this bad before?

Load to UT is 5k lbs 12ft but only $1,350 for a 2k miles..
There was a short load to GA from 1 military base to another it was 9ft tall and 450ish miles with out DH and they wanted to pay $600... I mean deal with BS of 2 military bases and a 9ft tall load and only paying $600..
a 20ft load to ID is paying $1,100.. $450 for a 15ft load to AZ... It's just bat #### crazy who would run them?
It';s just ridiculous.. but when I look around the county I'm seeing the same rates elsewhere as well. I mean as I say I'd just DH out of the state but I'm watching rates all though the south and they are all the same.. It's not like I can DH to IL or MI or somewhere..Last edited: Dec 10, 2019

If you say yes to loads paying 3.00 then great if the collective industry says yes to 1.00 loads then there is nothing for anyone. And the weakest go out of business rapidly.
The industry should tell the broker that its going to be 3.00 or nothing.
That nothing is really replaced FAST by many fly by night immigrant trucking companies who have no interest in becoming part of our Country as society would like them to. So they say yes to 1.00 or less per mile.
Its going to be about 5 to 10 years before the weak are weeded out and the strong demand 3.00 or nothing. They would just soon park it and wait until they get the call saying ok, we pay 3.00 to run this load.
Rates MUST go up. OR the entire industry will be hollowed out and even the strong are toppled. Then we will have Canadian and Mexican trucks using the negotiated trade freedoms to run freight from A to B inside these united states for 3.00 a mile. And we will have no choice but to pay it.
Ive seen this before in the oil embargo. that hurt us bad. And before that in the mid 60's when we closed up a resturant that was booming until I -95 got built. Suddenly everyone rolled on that interstate stopping for nothing until Delaware line. Then spend their money there. So we closed a resturant or two along the way until the early 80's when we broke again. Even the late 80's I was told to go home. No paper loads from International Paper in Harrisburg today until people get used to the idea of higher rates for paper on the market. So it cost me three days (And the company as well, we were 250 trucks. Most of us sat home a long weekend that month.)
I spent that time eating, sleeping and chasing my girlfriend when awake and strong enough to do so. She had a blast. A memory. Knowing when that phone rang on tuesday by dispatch they cannot get enough trucks fast enough to the mill to load paper. For two glorious months we were up to our ### in paper. I had about 7000 in the bank at the end of that time. What a summer that was. Glorious. What trucking should be.
Fall came and we sat, finally a week later the company went out of business. I already quit and joined another employer and rolled when I got the news. No problem. With a better employer and the money takes care of itself. No worries.
then the papers rolled again because dow jones, baltimore sun etc have reserves but are eating into them at a horrifying rate and need trucking AND rail road to deliver many new rolls. OR they go out of business.
They are finally going out of business now because no one buys a paper, they get it on digital download in a few minutes over coffee.
Using paper is just a example. Prices go up costs go up and truckers sit a while. But eventually those still in business get the call they have been waiting for 3.00 a mile roll it. Everyone else has gone out of business starving on 1.00 a mile. Business is like that. Those who have resources survive and thrive. The rest go out of business. Its common cycle up and down over the years.
Even the United States itself defaulted 4 times in our Nation's history. Im not going to address all of that because Politics is not a permitted subject here. The last time we defaulted the Square Mile of the UK in London bankers made sure that we incorperated the entire Nation so that its run like a business and less than run like a Nation.
We are going to default again. It's a matter of time. When you have no debt and some savings. You will be ok. Your family will be ok. The problem is where people concentrate in large masses for big trouble If you are not located in these areas living quietly out in the farm or country far from trouble, you will be ok.
I can go on. But trucking is feast and famine. Some years it's awesome and you cannot handle all the money flooding your company. Your trucks run so hard you buy new ones handover fist. But the trick is knowing when the freight shippers quit because no one at the mall wants to buy anything right now. Because they ahve too many credit cards for example. If you know to stop hauling baubles for malls and maybe switch to something truly good like Medicines that people need to get better, to heal and to live rather than die, then you are doing something truly great. @x1Heavy unfortunately the industry has more $1 mile drivers coming in then going out.
it’s inevitable, every industry known to man has taken this route. Big box stores replacing mom and pops, E-Giant stores slowly replacing big box stores.
it truly is inevitable. When people say “you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to drive” this is what happens. It becomes a low wage industry.
yes trucking use to mean a middle class income and providing for your family to some it still is, but that section of the industry is retiring and slowly being replaced by lower paid individuals.
I got into the industry not because I wanted to but because I needed to keep the roof over my head, after exploring all the options as to what I can do in the industry I saw nothing was worthwhile for me to pursue.
continuing and learning about Diesel engines to be a mechanic? Not worth it.
roadside assistance? Not worth it
starting a driving school? Not worth it
This industry isn’t on the ground floor like it was when everyone was making good money it’s actually reaching the top floor and it’s almost toppling. Reason why you see a surge of interest in driverless vehicles. They want to weed the stupid out of the industry and make driving so painless that even a immigrant who knows little English can sit behind the wheel and earn cash. Someone said that if they make driving a minimum wage on another thread people will choose to be burger flippers instead of being on the road, guess what even flipping burgers is getting automated.
