I have a good diving and work history, however it is all in Ireland and Europe and i can't figure if that is a good or a bad thing. When i get my license here it will be clean as obviously i will only have got it. Ireland doesn't do printed or online driver records so good luck getting that for any company (any endorsements are physically put on our license). Phoning my ex employers is no problem if they want to pay for the international call.

So my question is, will a company hire me if they can't get a hold of my driving record, or do i start with a clean slate here as i just got my license?

Your driving experience will not mean squat here, you will have to start from scratch..You might want to have your prior employers with work history faxed or emailed to you first, as I find that they probably are not will to shell out the extra $$ to do it for you...

Once you get your US CDL....and drive a truck in the US. You will have a driving history.

    But not until then.

    Sorry, that's how it works.

I understand that my driving experience means nothing here, what i meant was do companies here offer employment to newbies like me who just got off the boat so to speak, without me having a verifiable dmv even after i get my cdl A?

Yes they do, right after you attend a driving school. And ride with a POS trainer with about 6 months experience....and a God complex.

I have personally talked to drivers from Australia, New Zealand and Barbados that arrived here fresh and were cleared for hiring etc. :biggrin_25520:

Hey Irish....think we crossed paths in a similar thread i started. I have talked to a couple of companies and all have said the same thing. No gaurantees, not exactly helpful, but then I can understand that they are dealing with hundreds of applicants and won't really consider anyone until they actually have that application in front of them.....have you got your residency yet? I'm in a similar situation, NZ does not keep a driving "history", just a list of driving infringements going back five years. If you dont have any infringements then there is no piece of paper to give you.

Yeah same for Ireland with the driving history thing, will get my work authorization in about 4 weeks and then hopefully get the regular license quickly before i do my cdl.

Heard from an aussie girl on another thread that she has to wait a year in her state after getting her car license to do her cdl, i am hoping that is a state by state thing, Have you heard anything like that? How you adjusting to the US lifestyle?

Im still in NZ and won't be there until October, but ive lived in CA before so no worries adjusting to the lifestyle. I'm moving back to Monterey, not too far from your neck of the woods and probably going to school in Sacramento. I'll be doing the same thing, getting my regular license, and driving like a granny for awhile and then going to school as soon as i get my work authorisation. As far as I know, after reading the DMV site, there is not waiting period for getting your CDL in Ca...not sure about other states, might be an issue depending on where you go for a job??? I will have to check that out.
