I think when the bad guy chose to open fire on the police even though he missed the officer and hit their squad car that is more than enough for the officers to fire back.

To open fire on the law pretty much gets you dead. Usually. Or shot up so bad you wish you were dead. He might even still die. But oh well. He made his choice when he pointed the gun at the Law and opened fire.

I am in contact with our Lawmen regularly and know some of them by name etc I could not imagine a situation where I would have to raise my gun and open fire on them. Possibly when if for some reason they come through the door on a raid with false premises with violence and shock in the dead of night, it would be enough for me to return fire in a few moments not knowing who they are. It would get me killed but again it depends. They are always welcome and come by now and then.

Again when a bad guy decides to raise a weapon and shoot at the lawman, then it's pretty stark black and white. That person has decided that he or she will be killed firing at the good guys. And for what? it would be such a waste. I think the term suicide by cop comes to mind. But no one really knows what the bad guy was thinking.

The article did not describe the previous situation where one was killed by gun and the other was found to be shot up by gun from this one trucker in the truckstop. Since they did not explain THAT situation I cannot speculate on anything with one clear exception. When you open fire on the law, you will be taken out. Most of us who lawfully carry here in Arkansas would be the same as me, it would be almost impossible to point at the law and shoot.

One other thing. We are not obligated to draw. We are not a stand your ground state. However we are a castle doctrine state so... the tractor trailer would be part of that. Which leads back to the original problem in the truckstop, why was two people shot at with one killed and one wounded by the trucker in taht truckstop? Did they attack him? Or did the trucker go crazy mentally and wanted to go shoot people. Again we don't know.

That is the biggest problem I think. Not knowing anything about a situation whatever it is. The media is never any help with that. What might be some help is the trucker's family on social media who might write a statement explaining the situation or at some point later the police chief would lay out the situation once HE has all the facts should the bad guy survive. One thing is pretty clear, he's unemployed now. And probably come here to TTR and say that I was fired for shooting at people in my truck, is there a second chance employer who can hire me?

    I think not.

There are some people in our family who have been to war with weapons and for them it;s horrible and awful. They have lost so much. Other than a handgun revolver for bedside defense it is no problem for them to have a position not to be around guns in everyday life and work. Also living in a nicer area where there is very little crime or problems to where you feel unsafe without a gun has alot to do with it.

Just my thoughts. It might have some value or might not. Thats up to the reader. Again, the Media does not report in detail the overall situation. Why was the first two shot in the truckstop? Obviously that is enough for the Law to go after this trucker and when he decided to shoot at the Law, then it really threw everything out the window and reduced the situation to where the bad guy made a choice and does not have a future anymore due to that choice. If he makes it great. They prosecute him. If he does not? Oh well...

I was going to make a comment about people taking their 30 at the fuel island but found this...

A man was found dead in the parking lot of a gas station in Baldwin, about a mile away from an officer-involved shooting that took place on Interstate 10 and US-301 Thursday morning.

The man's wife identified him as Todd Phillips, a safety inspector for a trucking company the suspect had just been fired from.

Sources tell First Coast News Phillips was with a colleague from Rinaudo Enterprises and they were retrieving the fired employee's company truck.

Rinaudo mechanic Joe Parcell was injured in the shooting, according to his niece. UF Health said he is in stable condition.

This starts to clarify things. It looks like Rinaudo is based in Jacksonville.

Interesting. Now I see it the possibilites.

Driver is fired, company shows up to take truck from driver (Driver is fired, stranding is not company's problem hes fired.) Driver thinks he is going to be stranded, end of the world or whatever shoots the company people. Law is called and uphill from there.

I have been sent to recover trucks before from fired drivers, I have taken mechanics with me when it is suspected for sabotage or whatever. What I have not had done with two exceptions is a safety suit sent to be involved in the recovery.

New question. What in the world could possibly cause a fired trucker to raise a gun and shoot at people sent to take back their company tractor? Unless I consider what things might be in the fired drivers truck that he or she does not want company to have. Drugs? Or something else?

I am like number 5, I need input. Once i have input I can sit and think. What comes out might need correction or maybe a total rejecting due to other facts or laws that apply to a bad result of my thinking. Thats the biggest limitation I have in my life. I can only think about what I can see coming so to speak. What I don't know or do not remember from very relevant situations or laws is where I am found to be mistaken or even wrong in my thinking.

    Very sad for the family.

And out of curiosity, what were the exceptions?
