    Take 370 to 270E to 255S to 64.

64 is closed in St. Louis. It routes you around 270 to 70 through town.

Plenty of people have suggested the route you need to take and one of them suggested what I was going to say, Mapquest. Oh, are you a AAA member? If so, have you asked them to make you a Trip Tik?

Now, about using truck stops to grab shut eye instead of using motels. I had at one time suggested to Idle Aire that they may want to look into getting some parking areas in truck stops for four wheelers because four wheelers may be wanting to use Idle Aire, too. I did not get a response back, so, I guess my suggestion did not go over too well.

In terms of a strange car (SUV) in the parking lot for a lengthy amount of time, I think the truck stop security people would want to "have a discussion" with you. They don't know who you are, you could be a drug dealer, a pimp or a lot lizard, etc.

Also, for liability reasons, I think they may just tell you to move along.

In my ranking, Flying J's come first, then comes Petro, TA and last Pilot. What I would suggest is that you contact the public relations people at each corporate office via their respective websites and run your idea past them to stay on their lots even though you are not a truck driver.

See what they say. Then let us know. Good luck.

Pulling RV's and parking in the front, I see many people sleeping in their vehicles. If for a night, the truck stop would say nothing. Most likely you would be parked away from the building. I would not recommend the J because many of these places play music quite loudly.

The pilots are rather small for the most part. The TA's are okay. The petros are usually bigger.

Little America Wyoming would say nothing. Neither would Petro and Grand Island.

I am sure you could stay at the Walmarts as well.

Personally, I would think a motel would be better if it is warm out.

Yes, I have seen RV's, etc. in front of Flying J's and other truck stops but the truck stops have accepted them to park there since the size of their RV makes them hard to park anywhere else. Gee. I wonder why Flying J's play music loudly, maybe to keep four wheelers away from parking in their lots.

Wal Marts? I have seen the RV's parking at Wal-Mart, too but I have also seen and read about on this website the hassle drivers go through parking at a Wal Mart let alone an overnight four wheeler. The security people at Wal Mart may think a strange car in the parking lot for a long amount of time "may be casing the joint".

As far as the idea for staying in a hotel in case the weather is rather warm...

If you are a Priority Club member at Holiday Inns or a Redicard member at Red Roof Inns, you can get a better room rate.

Another idea would be stay at Interstate Rest Stops BUT ...

in Virginia the state government seems to have closed a bit more than half of them. Also, I have seen some rest stops with signs that only allow two hour parking and claim that the local and state police will be by to make sure you move on. I was at a rest stop just south of Fayetteville, North Carolina coming back from visiting a friend at Fernandina Beach, Florida and I spent the night at the rest stop. Very strange to see someone taking a sponge bath with a paper towel in the mens' room at 3 am and then have to put up with three seperate people coming over to the car banging on the window demanding that I give them money or giving me a sob story on why they need to beg for money.

    Well, let me say this......

I pull the camper one way. Bobtail back empty. I have slept exactly where I suggested when I was empty as well.

    Thanks for all the comments.

The idea of notifying corporate offices of various truck stops is a good one, although I don't think it would really be necessary. My desire to use truck stops for sleep rather than motels is based on other reasons than merely wanting to save money. Rather than planning in advance where I am going to stop and adhering to a rigid schedule, I'd rather have the flexibility of stopping & starting when I feel like it, which is what truck stops offer. As far as facility managers are concerned, I would only be stopping at one spot for a few hours and then moving on with as little fanfare as possible. I certainly don't want to bother any truckers or facility employees.

Part of the problem with notifying individual stops is that because of my flexibility I won't know where I will be stopping until I get on the road. I have pulled a list of potential stops for each state off the internet & will take that with me for reference, but I haven't made any notations as to which ones to shoot for.

Roadmedic, I hope you're wrong about Flying J's and the music factor.

    Beleive me, they are annoying.

Along the route you are planning, I sleep in the rest areas in Nebraska. Grand Island Pilot, ex 312. Petro in York about 356. Walmart is there as well.

If you list or pm the potential stopping points, I will see if I have ever stopped there.

Most truckstops really do not care, especially if you purchase from them.

Thanks for the offer, Roadmedic, but I don't have enough posts to send a pm.

Basically, the overall plan is to drive about 12 hours, then pulling in to a stop for rest, then driving some more. I plan on arriving in such areas as Rock Springs, York-Lincoln, Evansville-Louisville within a days' driving.

If anyone has any other favorites to mention along that route, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Rock Springs has a Walmart. The Flying J is rather small. I would choose Walmart. Park out on the edges around the campers.

In York, there is a Petro. It is okay. On the other side of 80 is a Walmart and Sapp Brothers. Toss up between petro and Walmart. If Walmart, hang around the edge around campers. At Petro, park away as far as you can. Avoids the noise of other people.

Evansville, and Louisville is not an easy area. It would be advisable to stop before or after. There is limited parking in the Louisville area.
