Do not where possible commute more than say 30 minutes to the truck yard.

In my day I have had serious converstations with employers 70 to 100 miles distant in the washington DC and Quantico area for me one way, they discouraged me becuase its almost two hours to the truck and it will be a 16 to 20 hour day every day. I was averaging 60 miles commutes one way with a 70' ford V8 in those days. It was a great car then.

Its been my experience that one hour one way is max so you can still get your 8 hours in bed at home. Some of my best local work was not even 5 minutes away.

I honestly wouldn't even bother getting a CDL if I wanted a 9-5 I'd go straight into being a diesel mechanic. All these sissy boys that are scared to hit the road and build a good career will be taking some low paying warehouse job after giving up . As IV said before all of the people in my large CDL class that wanted local no longer drive the 2 that wanted otr , well we are still at it.

I think Kemira Water resources has a terminal in the Atlanta area, They start off at 28.35 for the first 90 days then goes up a buck. Smooth Bore Chemical, good job nice tractors, they supply everything you need. probably be home most nights work 5 days a week. It would be worth checking out.

    Upinsmoke and pypfm Thank this.

85 to 90K a year isn't worth checking out according to some of the posters around here. Why sleep in a truck if you do not want to. Lots of good paying local, and line work around. Just have to look for it.

Thanks for the info.... But, I checked into Kemira Water Resources - and they want 2 years driving experience. As I am a recent CDL school graduate, I am unfortunately not eligible.

Wow really? You believe a driver can't have a good career unless they are OTR?

Well, I trucked 20 plus years over the road and hung up my spurs for good in 1999. Been local ever since. I'm making better money than I did otr and I'm home every night and every weekend to boot. Haven't slept in a truck in over 20 years. Only time I'm goin back over the road is when I finally retire and buy an RV and travel the country with my wife.

Not likely. Maybe greyhound? It's an insurance thing.

Get 6 months experience driving OTR, even if it is regional/dedicated. Then more options will be available. At 1 year.. MORE, At two years.. the world is your oyster. Patience.

If you wouldn't mind moving to northern Nevada, Greater Reno, the company I work for hires at 6 months experience. Home everyday, about 55 hour a weeks, and two full days off weekly. Gotta chain some though, Pay is in the $70k range.

Reno area is a very desirable place to reside right now, for so many reasons. Wikipedia the area if you have considered moving west. Vegas is good too.

Yeah, plenty of jobs in Nevada. No state income taxes and no food taxes and very reasonable cost of living.
