drunks or impaired drivers, head into the lights.
i was always told, they actually GET you into more trouble, cuz you're too confident you can get thru anything.

All you can do is drive safely, and pay even more attention to what is happening around you.

Also, if the conditions are actually 'terrible' then stay shut down.

If your idea of terrible is a thunderstorm and a bit of lightning, that's a problem. Black ice? Nope. Heavy caked snow on unplowed roads? Nope. Whiteout conditions due to dry snow and high winds? Nope. 60 MPH crosswinds and a light, high profile trailer? Nope.

Even if you are confident YOU can drive safely in bad conditions, remember that other people are not you.

This is so very true. Another problem is with most 4 wheel drives, you have to get out and lock that front axle to get the full benefit of the 4 wheel drive. In my lifetime I have seen more people with 4 wheel drive get into trouble than not. When off-roading I rather have a positive drive and a front-mounted wench! You can keep that expensive 4 wheel drive!

You’re talking about manual locking hubs. I don’t think they’re used anymore on new trucks. Mine doesn’t have them.

i think on the bigger F-250's and 350's, you still have manual locking hubs?

but that might have been 1 to 2 model years ago, when i was seeking a new truck.

2019 f-250, new, with locking front hubs.

i got this from some ford owners website

The reason why the 'super duty' ford trucks have manually locking hubs is by design....for a vacuum actuated hub to work, the wheel needs to spin min 3/4 of a turn. SuperDuty trucks are 'work trucks' so they are often off road, plowing snow etc...if you were in 2WD and got stuck in a vacuum actuated system it would be near impossible to have those hubs lock in if they truck cant move. Ford recognized this and put the manual locking hubs on all trucks (except the F150). Plus, if you had a vaccuum acuated system and that vaccuum fails then what? manual locking hubs wont fail like an accutated system.

Farmerbob1 and MACK E-6 Thank this.
