I'm no expert, but I thought I did. Lately however, I been seeing a lot of trucks. That do not have the company city and state listed. I also thought that was required.

Back when I was leased onto a mega carrier, they had “Contractor Division” under the company name. It seems like it’s not necessary to indicate who the driver is: company or contractor.

I believe if its own by a individual and leased to a carrier, than no. If the owner is operating as a company, than yes. Had a driver operating as a company get written up for not having "operated by" on the side. What is needed is DOT number, truck number, carrier name and if the IRP is in certain states registered weight, NY comes to mine. MC number is not required or encouraged.

If you have your name and the company you lease to on the truck you need to add operated buy .

Why not just check the FMCSA's web site for this info rather risking getting wrong information?

Their guidance at Regulations Section say's...

Question 1: What markings must be displayed on a CMV when used by two or more motor carriers?

Guidance: The markings of the motor carrier responsible for the operation of the CMV must be displayed at the time of transportation. If 2 or more names are on the vehicle, the name of the operating motor carrier must be preceded by the words "operated by."

The full 390.21 reg is at Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)

Edit: Old Man posted as I was writing and has the correct answer as usual.

This is getting confusing. The guidance answer appears to be referring to commercial rental trucks like Penske who have their company name, USDOT #, etc. on their trucks. So the guidance makes sense to say if a motor carrier leases this Penske truck, then they would just need to add the following without needing to block out the Penske name, USDOT #, etc.

Operated by _____________(Name of operating motor carrier)

What the OP is talking about is something else as I assume he does not have his own motor carrier authority, or won’t be using his when operating the truck.

No, it's not for rental trucks.

If you check the first link to the guidance I proviced it is headed with...

Section § 390.21: Marking of self-propelled CMVs and intermodal equipment.
