I have a 2007 379 Pete and know that I will need to do an inframe on it soon since it has 1.2 m miles on it. I was quoted that it would be in the neighborhood of $20K and was curious if it would make sense to just drop a rebuilt motor in it. Now, keep in mind that I do NOT know whats involved cost wise to do a swap. I was looking online at rebuilt motors (it came with an ISX Cummins) and they vary between $8K and about $12K. Can someone clue me in on what it would roughly cost to pay a shop to swap everything over, or would or just be easier to suck it up and drop $20+K on an inframe?
@TruckerPete1990 I think just had a inframe done. I would check the reputation of the companies offering rebuilt motors for 8-12k. That sounds more like running pull outs.
Where did you get the 20k quote from? Was that quote for a full rebuild or just an inframe. Full rebuild would include new turbo, injectors, etc. Cost could easily exceed the 20k if you arent careful. Engine swap labor is usually around 4500-5500 in my neck of the woods.
$32K out the door for a full ISX overhaul with a 200K mile warranty. $55K for a reman out the door. You said your's is a 07, so maybe $5K less.
How does it go from 17 k to $32 k. Maybe add a turbo, and injectors, water pump, oil pump, and cooler. Still $32 k? 55 k for a reman? Those prices sound crazy high. ISX parts are expensive, heads , I know for sure. But $55 k?
The dude where I keep my trucks has a 900 and a bull wagon. He had about $30K in his overhaul, not done at Cummins.
The question(s) are these - If you do an inframe, just the basic, and you put all your old stuff back on, then say the turbo goes south. Then the compressor. Then maybe an injector. You've saved what?
32k is insane. My 14 liter was $15,000 out the door a couple of years ago at the Detroit dealer with full warranty. Included everything a normal in frame gets along with a head, oil pump, and injectors. The turbo I replaced two months earlier myself and they reused it ... that was $1200.00 for a VGT model. So $16,200 all in. I would think you could get a brand new complete engine installed for 32 grand?
