Answer: No. The only requirements are as follows- Company name,Truck #, and DOT#. That’s it, - City, State, Mc#, operated by, leased to, GVW, steered and geared by, pit crew, wife and kids name, CB handle, all optional. Vin # for Colorado, so I’ve heard. DOT # is supposed to read USDOT12345678, no spaces, no periods. Don’t forget plate and ifta stickers. Inspection stickers aren’t required to be posted. Can be kept in permit book, for inspections.Size of letters, I think is 2”, for name, and 2.5” for usdot#1234567. May be 2.5” and 3” respectively. Can’t remember. Supposed to be contrasting colors. Legible from 50 ft. by a half blind DOT Officer.

 

This is not correct. As stated and shown in previous posts, if there is more than one carrier/person’s/company name on the truck (anywhere on the truck), per 390.21; If the name of any person other than the operating carrier appears on the CMV, the name of the operating carrier must be followed by the information required by paragraphs (b)(1) and (2) of this section, and be preceded by the words “operated by.”

In other words, if someone owed their truck and is leased to a carrier and has their company name on the truck and the the company name they are leased to is also on the truck, the operating carrier’s name must be preceded by “Operated By.” to avoid confusion. It is not needed if and only if one operating carrier’s name is on the truck and there is no other company name on the truck. Such is the case of lease operator who don’t own their trucks. Most of the time, these trucks only have one carrier listed on the truck, the carrier whom the truck belongs to until paid off.

Why would someone want two different names on the same truck? Simple, because some of us have our own authority but still contract our trucks to other carriers. I’m one who does this. I’m not taking my company’s name off my truck to lease it on to another carrier. So, since two carriers operate the same truck, my DOT number and plates come off my truck, and “Operated By” said carrier name goes on my fairings. My authority is still active and so is their authority. I just don’t operate under my authority while I work my contract with said carrier. Once I end my contract with said carrier, I take their name, DOT number, plates, and “Operated By”, off my truck and replace it with my DOT number and plates. Truck still has my company name and logo on it and I don’t miss a beat in revenue.

This is the way to do it according to FMCSA regulation 390.21. Anyone that wants a copy of what the FMCSA provided me of regulation 390.21, PM me and forward you a copy of the email they sent me.

 

Agreed, my statement is in reference to what’s required, Leased or not.The OP isn’t required to put his name, only the name of the Mc, running under. I just got new letters. Name, Usdot#, Truck#. The OP asked about requirements, leasing onto another Carrier.Even in your case, if Operating under another, your name is not “ required”

No problem, The Guy that made my letters yesterday, claims some states are requiring City, State. Also. Based on Drivers tickets he’s seen. I’m thinking of adding that. He also left a gap between us and dot. I know that’s wrong, but it looks better. Hope I don’t get a ticket for it! Lol. Current Letters are almost invisible, so it’s an improvement anyway.

 

When I got my numbers, I followed what Stevens Transport has on their trucks. I posted it below. About the USDOT #. Mine is separate. I looked in the regulations but wasn’t able to find a requirement for the USDOT and # to be together. I personally haven’t been bothered about my USDOT.
