I'm not a brand new driver but it's been 11.5 months driving for me. I want to switch companies but I've been told that mega carriers (my present company is) don't honor a 2 week notice; they have you turn over the truck keys as soon as you give notice. How accurate is this information? It is in my ethical work nature to give a months notice at least, but this is trucking and it sounds like that is not common practice here. Any and all suggestions/advice/ex personal experience is very much appreciated.
How to put in notice to company

You don't have to give any notice as long as you turn in the truck properly, such as turn the truck in at a designated terminal. Tell the company you're leaving and where do they want you to turn the truck in.

I started at a mega. I resigned by phone, then by email, from 2800 miles out. I gave 2 weeks notice with the stipulation that I'd work with them around delivery of their equipment to where they wanted it left, which worked out for all involved. They even routed me home to unloaded my private belongings, and I live in a freight black hole.
I think they appreciated that i worked with them on it and didn't abandon equipment.
They added nothing away all to my HireRight report.Wasted Thyme, faux_maestro, uncleal13 and 3 others Thank this. -
Don't give notice until you are sure of the new job. Then, at a terminal, tell them by qualcomm and/ or email that you quit. Turn the truck in, take pics and get a signature that truck is damage free and go enjoy your new job.Wasted Thyme, faux_maestro, bzinger and 4 others Thank this. -

I would ask for home time and once at home unload everything not essential for driving so you have the least amount of gear with you as possible.
Then send them a message over the Qualcomm (or whatever your company uses) telling them you will be leaving.
Personally I would give them 2 weeks notice and let them decide if they want to run you those 2 weeks or not. No sense in burring bridges when not necessary.Wasted Thyme, faux_maestro, Odin's Rabid Dog and 7 others Thank this. -
I don't suppose they'd help get me home? The nearest terminal is about 4.5 hours from home.
