What's wrong with cab over trucks

 

I ran one for a few years doing P&D. I liked it but it was a rough ride and your always stepping on a curved surface getting in and out, wet or icy. Here is some crash testing that may may you cringe or cheer. I know many times I've wanted to do some of these tricks, but I always held back.

 

They don't have air conditioning or heat, are unstable at speeds above 55 and can tip forward unpredictively while you're driving down the freeway. Plus you can't see anything closer than 50 yards in front of you.

Well, they have their pluses and minuses. Pluses include,,,,um,,,hold on,,,um, pluses, let's see, oh, I know one, they're great for backing in places, and tight spots( watch out for that right side fuel tank), at a time when conventionals were just cabs and "coffin" sleepers, a cabover had a lot of room. The downsides of a cabover are many. They ride awful, have a terrible right side blind spot, ( right fuel tank, again), hard to keep in your lane, hot, noisy, hard shifting, hard to work on, get less fuel mileage, and like others say, in an accident, adios. Years ago, all you saw were cabovers to haul longer trailers. After they abolished overall length laws, cabovers fell out of favor. Not sure you can even get a new cabover now. I hated them. It's a testament to my driving ability, that I never ran over anything while driving a cabover. Miserable trucks. I knew drivers that quit their jobs when the company got cabovers.

 

After I sold the 9670 I bought a kw k100 aerodyne and it was a Cadillac in its time but no I really don't miss driving a cab over .

 

The K100 and 262 were nice trucks, but I always got stuck driving the rattly door 4070's or the Freightshakers. ( or heaven forbid, the White "Road Commodes") I actually liked the 4070 I drove for a while. Had Reyco suspension, ( yuk) a shiny 290 and a 13 speed. Aside from the ride, it wasn't a bad truck. I remember, the GMC Astro was a pretty nice truck. And the less said about the "Crackerbox", the better.

 

Yeah ain't it funny the OEMs including kw and Pete never could build a cab with doors that didn't rattle .

 

That's what I used to use log books for.

 

Remember dash panels shoved full of match book covers ? Lol
