I changed my va cdl to North Carolina recently. When I went to turn in my va one the guy at DMV handed it back and said I could keep it for ID purposes. So I stuck it back in my wallet and never thought about it. Got pulled over today for 10 over in personal vehicle. He saw extra license, wrote me some kind of serious ticket for having two cdl. I have never had anything illegal on my DL. Honest mistake. What happens at court?

Go to court and plead stupidity to the judge. You should have cut it up as soon as you got the one from NC.

Did they not trim the edge off? In Texas they cut half an inch off the right side of the license.

Keeping a license for "ID purposes" is not the same as being in possession of 2 licenses. The latter is illegal in most, if not all states. Many states will leave your DL # active until it expires, even after switching to a new state, hence the comment from the DMV rep.

In Wisconsin they punch "Invalid" right in it, then they give you a paper license until your new one comes in the mail.

    ExOTR Thanks this.

Tell the judge exactly what happened. He may see it was an honest mistake but your speeding ticket he won't excuse that.

No they don't do anything to it, they just gave it right back. Wondering what will happen in court. I'm going to get a lawyer but hoping it doesn't mess up my cdl status or have some big fine.

I went from an AK CDL to a WA CDL, the clerk at the DMV kept my AK CDL, so I never even saw it again.

My wife on the other hand had a regular DL, the same clerk punched a hole in it invalidating it and handed it back to her.
