Passport Question

By what I read, the card is good for surface border crossing only...as in car/truck (and maybe train). At least I hope I read it right, because I am in the process of getting a Passport card myself for the purpose of running freight to Canada.

 

The passport card is just as valid for surface border crossing as the book. It's worthless for flying or cruises. The difference in cost is trivial. The process is the same for either. I got both. I carry the card everywhere and the passport in a secure location. It's a belt and suspenders plan. If you only get one, get the book.

 

If I remember correctly, the passport card was inexpensive--about $25-30 dollars. An actual passport is over $100. You can drive trucks across the border with the passport card only.

We have "Enhanced" driver's licenses here in Michigan. It works for air and cruise travel, Mexico, Canada and a few other countries, almost a passport. If you can get that, and do not plan on traveling internationally, that would be the best way to go if your state is in that program. It also covers you for some other Homeland security thing that all of us will be required to have in 2020.

 

The card is the same for cruises as it is for land travel. The only difference is for travel by air, you will have to have the book.

 

From what I read the biggest difference was the countries you can travel between the two forms. Jamaica , Bahamas and, Bermuda were listed on the short form travel countries. Most tourists fly into those areas as well deeper into Canada and Mexico.
