Hi I have a 2005 with D12 engine it has around 900k miles. Anytime when I turn off the engine and try to restart it under 10 minutes it would stumble and die. But if wait at least half an hour before restarting would start fine and run smoothly. Also the first start of the day always start smoothly without any problem. So it only causing problem if I turn off and restart the engine in less than 10 minutes. When it died the secondary fuel filter would be half empty when I took off to check. I have replaced the overflow valve by the front top of the engine and it didn’t fix the problem.
So my next step should replacing the fuel pump? The fuel filter housing? I have an electric prime pump on fuel filter housing if it makes any difference. Turning the electric prime on didn’t change anything and I still had to wait 30 minutes before I could restart the engine.
2005 D12 air entering the fuel system? Have to wait 30 minutes before restart.

Volvo and newer mack/volvo motors are well known for injector cup issues that make them start hard. Im not really familliar with the exact issue that happens to the cup but i know its a job that requires special tooling to accomplish. I think with the special tooling from volvo it can be done without removing the head but im not possitive of that. Could just be injector orings themselves by the way your describing it. Ive seen Cats with high mileage on injector orings that as long as they were shutoff hot and left to cool off overnight would start perfect with out a hiccup but if you shut them off befor they were warmed up they wouldnt start right or if you shut them off hot and tried to restart them befor they had cooled off they would not start without priming and or giving a big snort of ether....good luck. Post your finding after you get it figured out. If everything else checks out id say id pull all the injectors and inspect and atleast reseal them and reinstall.
poniikyanion Thanks this. -
It is my fuel filter housing. There is a crack along the side from the bottom going up.

You’re correct! Always have a dealer check the fuel water separator or fuel filter housing before pulling the valve cover.
