I'm looking at purchasing a truck and I was wondering upon completing the purchase, can I drive the truck home without tags as long as I have insurance on it and I have the bill of sale/title on my possession? This purchase will be from a private owner and most likely will be an out of town purchase. I live in NC.

    thank you.

You'll need a temporary tag taped to the windshield on the passenger side. That's how it's generally done.

I'd just make sure has insurance and drive it home. Might not be the right way but if you get stopped tell them you're not sure how your going to register it (cmv or rv) and I doubt you get a ticket.

I just did this beginning of month. I had temp tag and IFTA along with the insurance. Also put my numbers on the truck and ran my logs. There was a thread here about this and everyone wanted to argue. I didn’t want to take any chances with my brand new authority. What’s always typically done doesn’t make it right. It’s not worth destroying future plans just to be cheap or unprepared. :dontknow::dontknow:

If you are buying from a dealer. They will know what to do as far as tags etc

I do believe that you can also load a trailer working your way back home. Not 100% on that but I think there’s something with causing undue hardship?

If buying from a private seller I’d just call any dealer and ask about what they have for sale and then ask how they handle tags etc
Never know. That dealer may have what you’re looking for

Most states require temp permits. I had to get one in Utah to drive it to Vegas. I also had to get one in Vegas but the scale was closed and I was 10 miles away from my parking so oh well.

Different states have it set up differently for doing loads when the truck is new. Here in California, they have a way to avoid paying the sales tax if you pick up a load and deliver it out of state before bringing the trailer into California. I misunderstood and brought the trailer home, then left and picked up a load in Nevada and delivered in Oregon. That little mistake cost me a few thousand in taxes.
