    The eye of the storm....

This is copied and pasted from People's Media Company! Please read!

Early this morning, a series of new threads appeared on Ebay's Trust & Safety Discussion Board, in which the personal information of hundreds of Ebay users was posted. This information included credit card account numbers, as well as the 3 digit security code on credit cards.

The information was reportedly available on the discussion board for about an hour and a half, despite the fact that many users reported the violation within fifteen minutes of the first posting.

While at this point it is unclear to many users exactly what happened, those who frequent the Trust & Safety discussion forum on Ebay first noticed new threads appearing, with each thread containing the personal information and credit card account numbers of Ebay users. Over a short period of time, the number of threads steadily increased, until Ebay was finally forced to shut down the discussion board.

While Ebay has thus far made no official statement about the leak of information, some forum moderators have made a few claims that many Ebay users find dubious. One such claim is that there was a server glitch and that the forum board was displaying personal information of posters rather than the post itself.

Ebay users however believe that the site was hacked, and the hacker was posting new threads one by one, apparently waiting to see how long it would be before Ebay managed to remove the threads. Other speculative reports say that the information posted was false, though some users have reported seeing their info posted and that it was correct.

According to one poster on another discussion thread, "The info that was published included user id, name, address, email address, feedback score, credit card number, date of registration, and the three digit code contained on the back of your card. Because of this, the potential for fraud is very real, not only for those appearing on the list."

As Ebay users reported the offense and began posting new threads about the apparent hack, those threads were also steadily removed, causing many Ebay users to grow increasingly frustrated. Many believe that Ebay is trying to cover up the apparent hack and theft of user's personal and credit card information. Ebay staff at this point have remained primarily unresponsive to user concerns, but have been swift to reprimand users who continue to post new threads regarding the incident.

Many users have been quick to alert local and internet news resources to ensure that the public is aware that a hacker might have access to thousands more credit card numbers that what he managed to post. This could affect everyone who is part of the Ebay community, as a credit card is usually required to buy and sell on the site. Additionally, skilled hackers and fraudsters can also use this information for any number of illegal activities and scams, even raising the potential for fraud against individuals who rarely or never use Ebay.

</U>It is expected that the auction site may make an official statement sometime soon, but many users feel that Ebay has and still is acting very irresponsibly and that any explanation will be a lie and/or cover up of the facts.

While most forum observers put the list of immediately affected Ebay users at just over 1,000, the potential for many more credit card numbers and personal information to be leaked is much higher, if Ebay's servers were indeed compromised by a hacker.

WOW! Not good! I DO know eBay CAN be compromised because it happened to me for $1000. Since then, I have never used them. I thought it was an isolated incident, but I guess I was wrong. I HAVE seen a ton of eBay listings pop up (that were obviously not paid for) with porn, #####, and all kinds of crap. Somehow people can get into eBay and "spoof" their site...this has been happening for some time now. I thought SURELY they can stop it, but now I am kind of worried seeing this!

You have got to be kidding me, I saw the post requesting that they shut down the boards, people begging them to shut down the boards. Man this is going to be a disaster, for sure.:biggrin_25512:

WOW! Really? Can you copy and paste in here FAST if you see it? NOT the credit card info, of course, but the posts where people are begging? This is scary!

I can't post it, theres too many images in the thing, that and the links embedded would take a lot of time to strip out.

Do you want the link to the thread?

This was posted in one of my groups and I was a little concerned, but I don't see any info about it here.

ebay effed up big time this a.m. guys - if you have a cc on acct here at ebay - you MAY want to call and cancel it and put a hold on all buys!

ON the trust and safety board, there was PAGES - I mean I was on page 18 - and still searching when they closed the board, of peoples IDS - along with their ids - in the thread was ALL, I mean ALL their personal info - addy, phone, FULL name - CREDIT CARD INFO - TYPE, NUMBER, SECURITY NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE CARD, EXPIRY DATE - STATUS ON EBAY - the whole shebang! You may want to call your CC company NOW - put a hold on any orders/etc. and get new cards sent to you ASAP -I searched my IDS (I have a posting one, too) and didn't see either -b ut am still paranoid - what if I mistyped, etc. and cancel my card!!!

I saw it also and reported it immediately. I couldn't believe pages and pages of members info. I hope Ebay let's us know if it was a glitch or a hacker. I would bet it is a hacker because some of the later posts had the title "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee", like look what we can do.

I am going to cancel my cc and not take any chances. This is unbelievable.

Okay I can't remember but does e-bay require credit card info when a person registers? Or do they get the info when a person sells or buys, if so how? I always pay thru pay pal and it is seperate from e-bay right?
    Thanks

Most sellers have either a credit or debit card on file.

Here's how to check if you have one and update/remove it.

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/account/updating-creditcard.html

It's my understanding that if you don't have a credit card on file you will be able to list items, but you won't be able to use the scheduling feature.

Some people are recommending that users should check if they have a CC on file with eBay, and if so, to consider cancelling the card.
