My co-driver doesn't want to stay in the industry too long, and I'm finding I'm missing having a home. I want to go back to college, have a place of my own, and do other things. My "Things to do before I die" list is long, and if I drive for more than about 5 more years, I don't think I'll be able to accomplish most of it.

Not a dumb question at all...

Someone did sort of "state" that many went through the ice all the time..but that's what this stupid show leads you to believe. Totally UNTRUE!

In all the years I've been running up there I know of only ONE that went broke through the ice, but he did not go UNDER...that water was shallow! And it was HIS fault...he went to try to cross BEFORE the ice was rated for a truck.

Many years ago (in the '40's, 50's), before anyone really understood the dynamics of building roads on ice, many did....but not now.

If you want REAL & TRUE history on the ice roads, here's a link for you.

It is very informative & has hundreds of pictures, some from the 1940's of when this all began.

One thing I learned a long time ago was .... NEVER SAY NEVER! If you have the ambition & the drive to accomplish your goals...you WILL. I DID!!

BTW, most of my family though I was nuts too!

That's what I figured. If they went through all the time, then I'd imagine that a lot less people would be willing to do it. Who want to risks their life, their truck, and the freight when there's a good chance you'll end up in the lake?

Thanks for answering my question, I've been curious about the ice road trucking, and frozen north trucking for a while.

LOL, did anyone watch the "off the road" show last night? When that Burt guy wanted to beat down Rick with a 2x4, I could not stop laughing.

I DONT KNOW IF I'D CLASSIFY MYSELF AS AN "ICE ROAD TRUCKER", BUT IM IN THE ICE ALL WINTER LONG, MY DAD HAS A FLEET OF TRUCKS IN CANADA, AND EVERY WINTER I GO UP AND HELP HIM OUT. YEP, THE ROADS GET PRETTY HAIRY SOMETIMES, BUT THE MONEYS GOOD AND ITS A DIFFERENT ENVIORMENT FOR A CHANGE. SAFE DRIVING TO ALL MY FELLOW TRUCKERS WHO DRIVE HARD TO SUPPORT AMERICA AND THERE FAMILIES..:biggrin_25519:

    YeAH!
    I caught that, too.
And there's no doubt in MY mind that Burt meant
    EVERY word he said.
    And Rick wants "respect"???
    Funny way of gaining it.
    Ya reckon.

I'm no expert, but I believe there is a difference between cold weather, snowy, icy roads and ice roads. The ice roads are roads that have been constructed on lakes by special teams creating the correct ice thickness to support loaded truck traffic. The driving speeds, load weights, timing and probably bunches of other factors are highly regulated as everyone's safety depends on the rules being followed.
I am sure that Wildkat probably has more to add!
