I recently obtained both my DOT medical card and CDL learners permit with the intent on pursuing trucking. I'm most likely shipping out to Gary Indiana to train with Roehl's Flatbed division on 8/15. Best of luck to all those currently driving a truck and those who wish to.
Thanks.

Going flatbed with Roehl was one of the options I contemplated when I was getting started. I decided I didn't want to do flatbed. So, ended up going with Swift and doing reefer. It worked out well for me and after almost 2 years still with Swift with no real desire to go elsewhere.
Good luck to you with Roehl. They seem a decent company to drive for from what I've seen.Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Roehl will pay you while you're in their school i believe. Probably a good choice.
Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Good luck brother. Good place to start out with. Probably gonna be hauling alot of coils
Flat Earth Trucker and Kyle G. Thank this. -
I started with Roehl back in 2012, but I did dry van. If you search these forums you will see a lot of mixed reviews about them.... all I can say is I enjoyed my time there, learned a lot, met some great people, but after one year of the otr game I decided to move on and worked my way into local work.
I would go to roehl again if I had the choice to do it over. -
For me they were a good place to start. Lots of support, answers for any questions. Kind of penny pinchers for a mega. Trucks have outlets, inverters, electric apu which runs heat/AC with the truck off, and truck automatically starts to charge the batteries. They’re really good about home time, you’re preferred schedule, and they’re just generally flexible. However there is more money to be made elsewhere, especially after your first year. Stick through the contract.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've done a ton of research and seem to have found nothing but mixed reviews about every company. It's really hard to sift through the good and bad and then find a company that feels legit. Roehl happens to be one of the few paid CDL companies that hires in my area also.
I chose flatbed because I have experience with using chains, tie downs, securing large boats for transport, while have zero issues with working in bad weather, hot or cold.
Pain and misery in the work environment is all I've ever known lol. Working in tight spaces, crouched over, upside down, 20+ hour days in the middle of winter on the ocean etc etc.
All I can do is hope that I can successfully navigate through all the ######## that i'm sure this company will have to offer. We shall see. -
I plan on sticking with the contract for sure. I fully realize that I will have to go above and beyond in order to earn good miles or get good loads. Its just common sense that anyone slacking in this world is going to get left behind and will probably be forced to haul shorter and less desirable loads.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
My advice to you, or any rookie, is to just suck it up and play along for awhile, learn the basics and have a good time. Trucking isn't rocket science.
Once you get that first year in you will probably have a pretty good idea where you want to go from there, and as long as you keep your #### together, there won't be anything to stop you from going where you want.
Be sure to check out the flatbed forum here on TTR, lots of good info and cool people always happy to help you out with securement advice.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
I've read the fine print and i'm ready to be the yes man that they want in order to get my foot in the door and gain experience.
