The 466E is a far superior engine. Much more durable, with better longevity. Yes, the 444 shares parts with Ford pickup diesels but the 444 suffers from being underpowered and overworked.
As for configuration there probably is a crew cab 444 with an Eaton 6 speed out there somewhere. However crew cab 4700s (or any medium duty truck) are rare already, so you may want to compromise on the engine or trans.
If you want fleet experience with the 444/Allison combos go to school bus forums. That combo was a mainstay in those fleets for many many years. Do keep in mind, however that there are different Allison autos, as school buses tend to be lower cost and be geared lower, with lower top speeds. A fairly popular transmission for cash strapped districts was the AT-545 which did not last for #### as it was being pushed too hard, even behind the relatively weak 444 (it was originally built for the old school Ford and Chevy buses, powered by wheezy, anemic industrial gas V8s) . Many of those died a premature death.
However, beefier Allisons were mostly rock solid.
