Executives, city leaders and more celebrated the start of construction on a new independent movie house and performance theater in downtown Las Vegas.
A ceremonially "groundtaking" was held Friday for The Beverly Theater on 6th Street near Bonneville Avenue.
Rogers Foundation CEO Rory Reid, foundation chair Beverly Rogers and Las Vegas City Councilwoman Olivia Diaz gave remarks, according to a foundation spokesperson.
Raiders bandleader Dave Perrico and the Las Vegas Academy Jazz Band performed live, and RJ Owens, a cast member of Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere," made a surprise appearance.
A spokesperson for the Rogers Foundation says the term "groundtaking" refers to the fact that everyone in the audience was invited to take home a commemorative jar of dirt.
The Beverly will be two stories tall and cover more than 14,000 square feet. It's expected to host independent films, music, artistic performances, educational programming and more, seven days a week.
The space is expected to be completed by mid-to-late 2022.
